From unsure to university – how South Staffordshire College helped Fin find his dream career path
March 2026
When Fin O’Brien first joined Tamworth College, on the Introduction to College course in 2022, he had no clear idea of what his future might look like. Without GCSEs in maths and English, choosing a direction felt challenging, and his confidence was low.
The Introduction to College programme proved to be a crucial first step. The course helped Fin to settle into college life, build confidence, meet new people, and explore different career options in a supportive environment.
“I didn’t know what I wanted to do at first,” Fin explained. “The Intro to College course gave me the time and space to try new things.”
Initially, Fin was torn between a future career working in finance and a growing passion for music. While learning about finance was interesting, it didn’t bring the same excitement that his passion for music did. After buying a guitar in late 2022, Fin began teaching himself at home, learning songs from his favourite bands and discovering a love for creativity and performance.
A visit to Lichfield College helped solidify that music was his dream future career. “When I saw the music studios at the college, and met the music team, I knew that was where I wanted to be,” said Fin.
Fin’s journey wasn’t without its challenges. After starting the music course, he became unwell and had to step away from his studies. Determined to continue, Fin returned the following year and, with the support of staff at the college, continued with his music course. Fin is now in his final year of Level 3 Music.
During his time on the course, Fin has taken part in a wide range of enrichment and performance opportunities, including taking part in Introducing Nights, pit band performances, Battle of the Bands and performances at the Fuse Festival. These experiences have helped him build confidence, develop industry‑relevant skills, and collaborate creatively with fellow students.
“College has changed me massively,” Fin says. “I used to struggle with socialising and didn’t know what I wanted to do with my future. Since starting college, I’ve met so many people who love the same things I do, and I’ve been able to write music, form bands and improve my guitar skills.”
Fin has now applied to university to study for a music degree, with ambitions to continue developing his career in the music industry.
“I’m not exactly sure what job I want in the music industry yet,” Fin adds, “but I know that without South Staffordshire College, I definitely wouldn’t be where I am now.”
South Staffordshire College would like to wish Fin the very best with his time at University and with his future career in the music industry.
