South Staffordshire College celebrates double award win at National Animal Welfare Inter-College Competition

June 2026

Animal Care students from South Staffordshire College are celebrating success after securing two category wins at the National Animal Welfare Inter-college Competition, endorsed by WorldSkills UK.

The competition brought together students from colleges across the UK, challenging them to showcase their knowledge, creativity and practical skills in animal welfare and management through a series of industry-focused tasks.

The programme featured competitions across multiple levels and themes, enabling learners to develop a wide range of industry-relevant skills. These included environmental enrichment design, enclosure design and welfare planning, cognitive enrichment research and development, digital marketing campaigns promoting animal welfare, and work experience portfolio presentations.

Learners representing Team SSC included:

  • Gateway – Ellie Degenetais and Summer Childs
  • Level 1 – Tilley Brazier and Chelsea Buckless
  • Level 2 – Eva Wilson
  • Level 3 – Grace Hill and Charley Ross
  • T Level – Issy Beeson

Students were required to demonstrate a high level of technical ability, creativity and professional knowledge, with activities designed to reflect real-world animal management practices, including enrichment design, welfare planning and industry-style presentations.

Competitions such as this provide learners with the opportunity to apply their skills in a professional environment, developing confidence and employability skills while preparing for careers within the animal care sector.

Will Sibley, Curriculum Manager at South Staffordshire College, said: “We are incredibly proud of our learners for this fantastic achievement. Securing two category wins at a national competition is a testament to their hard work, creativity and commitment to animal welfare.”

South Staffordshire College would like to congratulate all students who took part and represented the college so positively, as well as students from Sparsholt College Group, Bishop Burton College, Oaklands College, Duchy College, UCS College Group, and Solihull College & University Centre.
