South Staffordshire College recognised with Centre of Excellence status by Cornerstone VR

May 2025

Cornerstone VR Centre of Excellence award

South Staffordshire College has been awarded Centre of Excellence status by Cornerstone VR, part of The Antser Group, in recognition of its sustained and practice‑led approach to immersive learning.

The recognition reflects the impact of a six‑month virtual reality pilot which focused on embedding VR meaningfully into teaching, learning and learner support, rather than adopting it as a short‑term or standalone initiative.

Throughout the pilot, Cornerstone VR content was integrated across curriculum delivery, tutorials, safeguarding activity and college‑wide Digital Weeks. Learners experienced immersive learning as part of their everyday lessons, reinforcing VR as a purposeful learning tool rather than a one‑off experience.

Investment in VR extended beyond equipment alone. The college put in place the infrastructure and support required to deploy immersive learning at scale, including coordinated kit management, Digital Learning Technologist support, Student Digital Champions and dedicated VR spaces used for staff training, curriculum delivery and sector events.

The pilot also helped build staff confidence in using VR responsibly, particularly when delivering sensitive and high‑impact content. Cornerstone VR scenarios were used to support learning around topics such as knife crime, grooming, safeguarding and cyber bullying, enabling staff to facilitate complex conversations in a structured, supported and learner‑centred way.

Across curriculum delivery, tutorials and enrichment activity, the pilot demonstrated increased learner engagement, stronger contextual understanding, and improved confidence when exploring safeguarding and employability scenarios. Learners consistently highlighted the realism and impact of VR compared with more traditional approaches.

Alongside delivery, the college worked closely with Cornerstone VR to co‑develop and test content. The Digital Learning Team collaborated with Paul Leahy from Cornerstone, which provided an opportunity for staff and learners to contribute curriculum‑led ideas, testing scenarios in live learning environments and providing detailed feedback on usability and impact. Learner feedback gathered during the pilot directly informed Cornerstone VR’s wider product development.

The Cornerstone VR Centre of Excellence status recognises South Staffordshire College’s strategic, values‑led approach to immersive learning, its commitment to staff and learner confidence, and its willingness to share effective practice across the further education sector.
