  • What Support can we provide?

    Additional support will be available to help you increase your confidence and develop strategies that can help you to learn more independently.

    This can include:

    • transition from school to college and helping you settle in
    • discreet in-class support or 1:1 support for a specific learning difference or disability
    • assistive technology e.g. speech to text, screen overlays, helpful apps
    • specialist equipment and software loans e.g. Dictaphone, ipads, laptops, radio aid, reading pens
    • specialist communication support e.g .BSL, Braille
    • additional assignment workshops to develop organisational skills
    • additional support for exams (exam access arrangements)
    • support at lunch times and breaks
    • support with personal care needs
    • support with mobility
    • support for mental health
    • support with personal care needs
    • support for medical needs
  • If you have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP)

    The Special Educational Needs and Disability Code of Practice (0-25 years) 2014 states that: “A child or young person has SEN if they have a learning difficulty or disability which calls for special educational provision to be made for him or her.”

    Before you come to college

    Let your current setting (e.g. School) know you are interested in progressing to South Staffordshire College and your SEND key workers will consult with us and send us your EHC plan

    We will confirm with the local authority if we can meet your individual needs documented in the plan within 15 days

    We can also attend your final EHCP annual review at your current setting to request the support you require in College is reflected in the plan

    Transition can be planned and implemented. E.g. visit to the college, meet key support staff

    Support can also be provided at your interview and taster session for your chosen course

    During your time at College

    You will have an annual review of your EHCP each year you are at College

    The additional support you are provided with will reflect that documented in the plan but also reviewed each term and adjusted according to the progress you are making towards independence

    You will have a key person in the learning support team you and your parents can contact regarding your additional support

    Our Learning Support team are all based in our Learning Support Zones on each campus that also provides the following additional facilities to support you

    • Quiet workspace facilitated by learning support assistants
    • A safe place to discuss your support needs
    • Additional support workshops for maths and English
    • Assignment workshops
    • Interview and presentation skills
    • Support with organisation
    • Support for anxiety, behaviour and necessary or planned timeout
    • Nurture group to support socialisation and communication skills
    • Support for sensory needs
    • Support for medical needs
