What skills will I develop?

As well as learning to use cameras, lights and practicing directing skills, students will become proficient in Adobe Premiere, After Effects, and Photoshop.

First year modules cover the principles of cinematography, film sound, live studio production, filming on location, post production and design.

Second year modules include pitching and producing a documentary, working with corporate clients and an independent feature film, which will premiere at the Lichfield Garrick – All of which contributes to a diverse showreel of work to kickstart your career and demonstrate production experience across a range of digital disciplines.

Careers

If you choose not to top-up to a BSc degree, you can use your qualification, employability skills and expertise to seek employment in the Film and Television industry.

Former students have gone on to work for major film studios, the BBC and ITV, independent production houses, e-learning providers and film festivals, as well those who start their own production companies and work on award winning independent feature films.

Careers available to graduates include;

Film Director, Camera Operator, Editor, Animator, Producer, Lighting Technician, Visual Effects Designer, Studio Floor Manager, Scriptwriter, Online Video Content Producer.

The UK Film & TV sector is an international success story at the forefront of the digital revolution. The home entertainment video market rose by 10% last year, generating £2.34 billion. Cinema admissions reached their highest since 1970.

Creative industries drive economic growth across the UK – on track to create one million new jobs by 2030. The average salary for creative jobs in Birmingham is £32,000 – £55,000. Combining cutting-edge digital technology and creativity, there were an estimated 245,000 jobs in the TV, film, radio and photography sector last year.

After completing the Foundation Degree in Film & TV (Level 5) students have the option to top up to a BSc (Hons) degree (Level 6).

Work experience

The course is designed to include commercial work-based production experiences, be that through producing and exhibiting a feature film to a broad audience, or through working on professional client video projects. This invaluable experience demonstrates strong employability.

English and maths

Through script writing, editing, production planning, cinematography and using Adobe software, English, maths and IT skills are developed throughout the whole of the course. As a communications industry, these core skills are at the forefront of digital film and television production.

Students will receive a timetable for their course at enrolment in September.

Students require general stationery, folders and notebooks for lecture notes and coursework. Those who prefer to take notes electronically may wish to use their personal laptop or tablet device in class. Lichfield College offers a Learning Resource Centre where students can access computers and printers if they wish.

All students need a portable hard drive no smaller than 1TB for storing practical work (approx. £40) and a set of headphones for monitoring sound in the edit suite (approx. £15). Students may download e-books or access hard copies of literature from the e-library for free, however those who wish to purchase their own books independently can expect to spend around £80.

We run optional trips to Harry Potter Studios and Disneyland Paris. Costs are dependent on the number of students who wish to participate.

Students may wish to hire locations, specialist equipment and professional actors when carrying out their practical films. These may incur costs but are not mandatory. Students may wish to utilise funds from Maintenance Loans to cover additional costs and production expenses. To raise production budgets, students are invited to raise funds to purchase set building materials, props and to cover travel expenses.
