Work Experience

When you choose to study with us, you’ll complete an industry placement or work experience placement as part of your study programme. Intended to help you get a head start by gaining valuable employability skills and practical experience that’s relevant to your chosen industry.

  • About work experience

    When you choose to study with us, you’ll complete an industry placement or work experience placement as part of your study programme. Intended to help you get a head start by gaining valuable employability skills and practical experience that’s relevant to your chosen industry.

  • When and how do I apply?

    The amount of work experience you’ll need to complete will depend on your chosen course. You will be required to complete a minimum of 30 hours of work experience however some courses will be in excess of 315 hours per year.

    It’s never too early to start thinking about your industry work placement.

    You will be responsible for finding your placement, so if you’re joining us in September, now is a great time to start searching for and contacting your ideal employers.  You’ll ideally have your placement lined up by the time you join us in September, but if you need help or advice before getting started, you can contact our dedicated team by emailing work.experience@southstaffs.ac.uk.

    How to apply

    Once you’ve sourced your preferred role, please fill in the online form above to tell us about your placement.  We will then contact the employer to make arrangements.

  • Selecting the right placement

    When thinking about and looking for your placement, you’ll need to bear in mind that your placement should be accessible to you, so it’s important to make realistic plans in line with your travel arrangements.

    You will need a placement that is linked to your chosen industry, ensuring that you enjoy an opportunity that is relevant and meaningful in line with your study programme and goals. This will help you maximise your chance to gain skills in your chosen subject area. You will be set work experience objectives to meet by your course tutor and a member of the work experience team will monitor your progress.

    Important Information

    Your placement must not commence until after you have started studying with us and your work placement officer has visited your chosen employer to carry out a pre-placement assessment. This assessment will ensure that the placement is going to be suitable for you.

    All placements must have an identified supervisor and employer liability insurance.

  • What can I offer as an employer?

    The workforce of the future

    T Levels are a new two-year qualification for 16 to 19 year olds. Designed with employers, each T Level is equivalent to 3 A levels and will help young people develop the knowledge, attitude and practical skills to thrive in the workplace.

    At the heart of each course, a 45-day industry placement will give you early access to the brightest talent entering your market.

    Industry placements are happening at SSC

    To prepare for T Levels, employers across Staffordshire and the Midlands are partnering with South Staffordshire College to trial industry placements.

    You can join this vocational revolution right now. Students are ready to start placements in multiple curriculum areas here at South Staffordshire College. To register your interest in offering and industry placement please email work.experience@southstaffs.ac.uk.

    What will it cost?

    Apart from the financial cost of managing a student, industry placements should cost you very little. There is no legal requirement or expectation that students will be paid, as it is part of a course. However, you can pay students if you wish.

    How much time?

    An industry placement lasts for a minimum of 315 hours (approximately 45 days). Placements can be flexible, they can be delivered as blocks of days or regular days each week, depending on the timetable for the student.

  • How SSC support businesses

    You’ll receive support at every stage of the process from South Staffordshire College, we will help you:

    •  recruit the right student
    •  plan and set objectives for the industry placement
    •  deal with any necessary paperwork

     

    Before a student starts:

    •  you must: ensure that the work environment is safe
    •  have a line manager to support the student and provide an appraisal of their time on the placement
