  • Is this course for you?

    This course is suitable for school leavers and adults who already hold the Level 2 Certificate for Dog Grooming Assistants, and want to progress in the dog grooming industry by becoming a professional stylist, salon manager or even by starting your own grooming business.

    Please note: Level 3 groups are run on Monday mornings, Monday afternoons, Tuesday mornings, and Tuesday afternoons. As well as the day and time you will attend college, you will also be required to attend an additional online session once a week on a Wednesday evening from 6pm-9pm.

  • Required qualifications

    You must hold the City and Guilds Level 2 Certificate for Dog Grooming Assistants prior to enrolling.

  • What skills will I develop?

    This one-year course is designed to give you the skills required to become a professional dog grooming stylist.

    You will complete a range of mandatory and optional units including:

    • Assessing and planning dog grooming work
    • Bathing and cleaning dogs
    • Controlling and restraining animals
    • Health checking a dog by a dog groomer
    • Preparing, styling, and finishing a dog (hand stripping, breed standard, drop coat and wool mix styling)
    • Customer service and record keeping in a dog grooming environment

    The assessment for this qualification will require you to achieve:

    • A written exam which covers the knowledge and understanding within the qualification
    • A practical assignment which covers health checks, first aid and grooming of dogs with different coat types and for different requirements
    • Various written assignments for you to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the modules within the qualification

    This is a part-time course with the practical lessons taking place in the college’s on-site commercial grooming salon. You will be required to attend for 3.5 hours a week for practical lessons and theory is done remotely from home.

  • Careers

    A level 3 qualification could help you gain a career as a senior dog groomer, a manager of a dog grooming salon or by becoming self-employed.

  • English and maths

    English is incorporated into the course by means of communication with clients, peers, and tutors, as well as reading and writing within set assignments.

    Maths is incorporated into the course by means of timekeeping, dilution rates, blade lengths and handling payments.

  • Work experience

    You will be expected to complete a minimum of 60 hours work experience to get the best out of your qualification and put the skills learnt during practical sessions into a real-life work experience. Self-employment within your own business counts as work experience.

  • Other important information

    You will be expected to own or purchase the correct personal protective equipment (PPE). A kit list will be provided with full kit costings listed, and a bursary is available towards the kit costing providing a bursary was not applied for at Level 2 Dog Grooming (please note that bursaries are subject to application approval).
