  • Is this course for you?

This is a one-year course aimed at school leavers and adults who want to progress into the dog grooming industry and learn the basics of dog grooming. The course is a pre-requisite for the level 3.

You will be expected to own or purchase the correct personal protective equipment (PPE). A kit list will be provided with full kit costings listed, and a bursary is available towards the kit costing (please note that bursaries are subject to application approval).

We are unable to accept learners with additional needs onto that course due to the time frame of the referral process.

Please note: As well as the day and time you will attend college mentioned at the bottom of this page, you will also be required to attend an additional online session once a week on a Tuesday evening from 6.30pm-9pm.

  • Required qualifications

There are no formal entry requirements, but for this fast track course learners need salon based experience and an ongoing placement.

  • What skills will I develop?

This qualification is designed to help build knowledge and understanding while developing your work-based skills. It will give you the basics to start working within the grooming environment. The qualification was rewritten in 2020 and we are one of a few colleges that deliver the new level 2 qualification, where within the course there are no individual unit assessments unlike the old qualification.

The practical lessons take place in the college’s on-site commercial grooming salon. You will be required to attend for 3.5 hours per week for practical lessons and theory lessons are done remotely.

Students are assessed by means of two observed practical assessments and an online theory exam.

  • Careers

This qualification will help you gain the basic practical knowledge to progress on to our Level 3 Dog Grooming course or get a job as a:

    • Dog groomer
    • Assistant dog groomer
  • English and maths

English is incorporated into the course by means of communication with clients, peers, and tutors, as well as reading and writing within set assignments.

Maths is incorporated into the course by means of timekeeping, dilution rates, blade lengths and handling payments.

  • Work experience

You will need to complete 40 hours of work experience within a dog grooming salon which must be ongoing throughout the duration of the course.

A work placement needs to be found by week 4 of the 36 week course. Learners are responsible for sourcing their own placements.
