  • Is this course for you?

    If you are looking to start a career in the dog grooming industry, then this is the course for you.

    This one-year course is designed for school leavers aged 16-18 who want to learn the basics of dog grooming and is split between weekly:

    • Practical sessions in the salon
    • Theory sessions
    • Tutorial sessions
    • Work experience
    • GCSE English and/or maths sessions (if required)

    The Level 2 course is also a pre-requisite for our Level 3 Dog Grooming course if you intend to progress onto that in the future with the aim of becoming a professional dog groomer.

    Upon successful completion of this course, you will achieve the City & Guilds Level 2 Certificate for Dog Grooming Assistants.

  • Required qualifications

    To be accepted onto the course, you will need a minimum of 2 GCSEs at Grade 3 or above, one of which must be either English or maths, or equivalent qualifications.

  • What skills will I develop?

    You will gain the practical skills and theoretical knowledge that are important for working as a Dog Grooming Assistant including:

    • Preparing and grooming dogs prior to bathing
    • Bathing of dogs
    • Drying dogs and preparing a dog for styling
    • Carrying out trimming of a dog’s coat to prepare for styling
    • Moving and lifting dogs
    • Maintaining the cleanliness and biosecurity of the dog grooming environment
    • Professional conduct
    • An introduction to anatomical features, breed characteristics, and behaviour of dogs
  • Careers

    Passing this course will give you the necessary technical skills and knowledge to work in the industry as a Dog Grooming Assistant, completing tasks such as bathing dogs, preparing dogs for a stylist, cleaning, administrative work, and being front of house.

    You could also progress to further learning and training in this area, and if you would like to become a professional dog groomer, this qualification will help you gain the basic practical knowledge to progress onto our Level 3 Dog Grooming course.

  • Work experience

    This course is designed to build your knowledge and understanding whilst also developing your work-based skills which will give you the basics to start working within a grooming environment.

    Throughout the year, you will need to complete 60 hours of work experience with a qualified dog groomer and will be responsible for sourcing your own placement.

  • English and maths

    If you do not have a Grade 4 or above in English, maths, or both subjects, you will be required to attend weekly GCSE classes during your time at college.

    English and maths skills will also be embedded throughout the course. English is developed through communication with clients, peers, and lecturers, as well as through reading and writing activities within assignments. Maths is developed through tasks involving timekeeping, dilution ratios, blade lengths, and handling payments.

    Depending on your individual circumstances, you may be eligible for financial support to help you cover the cost of the equipment that will be essential for the course.
