South Staffordshire College helps job seekers to #GetEmployed

Date 21/07/2020

Has the pandemic left you unemployed? Perhaps you need to up-skill to get back into work? South Staffordshire College is committed to providing courses, training opportunities, short courses, distance learning courses, apprenticeships and sector-based work academies that can help you to get back in to work.

There is something to suit everyone and courses will be delivered across the region at our Colleges in Tamworth, Lichfield, Cannock and Rodbaston. Prefer to stay at home? No problem, there are tons of online courses you can study from the comfort of your home too.

The best bit? Your chosen course may also be free!

Courses on offer have been designed to meet the skills shortages in the West Midlands, so not only will you be supported to achieve the right qualifications but we’ll help you to develop skills that businesses really want – helping you to gain employment.

The Government has recently re-launched ‘sector-based work academies’ to help get Britain working again. If you’re ready for work and in receipt of benefits to secure employment you could work with an employer to meet their employment requirements between 3 days and 6 weeks. This means you can gain relevant work experience working in your chosen industry, and but still claim benefits, and your travel and childcare costs will be paid for the duration of your placement. Upon completion of your course, you will be guaranteed an interview for a real job opportunity!

We are also offering a wide range of courses to help you get back into employment or begin self-employed work. Courses are available across the following career areas: accounts, business, animal care, construction, digital, education, early years, health and social care, engineering, science, English, maths, hair, beauty, travel and retail, so there is something for everyone, whatever your career goal.

STEP UP is designed to give you an introduction to a specific sector area so that you can see if it’s a career option you’d like to pursue. As part of these courses we also work with you to build your confidence, create your CV and gain interview techniques to make sure that you stand out against the crowd! All of our step-up courses can be offered as discrete SBWA and tailed to meet employer’s needs.

Within the next 10-20 years, 90% of jobs will require an element of digital skills, so why not get ahead and learn the latest digital skills at the colleges Digital Skills Academy. Specialist courses are also available to provide technical knowledge in Microsoft Office, Huawei and cloud computing.

Finally, we are offering a short 2 day ‘Get Work Ready’ programme, you can complete both days or just one day depending on what skills you want to develop. Day 1- Get Application Ready, where you will review and refresh your CV, learn how to use online job search data bases and how to effectively complete online application forms.  Day-2 – Get Interview Ready, cover top tips for how to stand out at a job interview, how to effectively answer interview questions and how to apply the new skills you have learnt.

Kirk Hookham, Deputy CEO of South Staffordshire College said “We see our role as a College to be the place where those who find themselves unemployed or recently redundant come to for the support they need in order to get employed.  For this reason, we have created a wide range of programmes to help people get back into employment either through studying face to face classes or online.  We can also offer Sector Based Work Academies by working with employers, we can offer bite sized classes through to apprenticeships and a lot more.  Our aim as a college is to Transform lives and providing this brand-new suite of programmes, we believe, is a big step in the right direction.  Our new programmes don’t stop there though.  We are now working on how we can roll out and support the new Kickstarter programme announced recently and how we can support those with business start-up ideas through a brand new Business Start-Up Academy, more to follow on this soon.”

You will study alongside expert tutors and have access to a wide range of industry standard facilities. You can gain your new qualification by fitting it in around other commitments.

Adult learners (19+) can apply to the college for support with funding childcare, travel or equipment costs through its bursary scheme. To find out more information please email bursary.enquiries@southstaffs.ac.uk
