South Staffordshire College has been successful in its bid to secure funding to support with the re-development of its Tamworth College site.

The college has secured funding from the Department of Education and through the Future High Streets Fund (FHSF) whose aim is to renew and reshape town centres and high streets in a way that drives growth, improves experience and ensure future sustainability.

Relocating Tamworth College by St. Editha’s Square will help place professional, vocational and technical education in the heart of the town centre, which is at the heart of the Town’s skills strategy and economic growth plan. The new Tamworth will be easy for learners to access from direct transport links and allow learning to take place in brand new and state-of-the-art facilities.

Claire Boliver, Chief Executive Offer at South Staffordshire College said “Many hours of consultations have taken place with architects and managers to ensure that Tamworth College can continue to offer a wide range of courses for the community in its new home. Local residents will be able to create their career in a wide range of areas such as business, health and social care, early years, public services, sport, travel and tourism, motor vehicle, engineering, construction, hospitality and catering, digital skills, and hair and beauty.”

A planning application has been submitted, with a planning judgment expected in September 2022. It is hoped the new Tamworth College will be completed in summer 2024 with teaching starting in September 2024.

Leader of Tamworth Borough Council, Cllr Jeremy Oates, said: “It’s great news that South Staffordshire College has secured all the funding it needs to facilitate a move into the former Tamworth Co-operative Society building. This is a key element of plans to transform the heart of Tamworth and breathe life into the town centre with additional footfall into the area, as well as boosting our local skills base to create better futures for our young people and businesses alike.

“It’s getting really exciting now and Tamworth will look very different to what we’re used to as the other regeneration projects planned are also moving forward nicely. It’s all detailed on our Transforming Tamworth website.”
