    Are you passionate about horses, do you enjoy caring for and working with horses? Do you want to turn your interest into your future career?

    This course is perfect for students that want to expand their skills, knowledge and experience of working with horses and who want to progress towards a career in the equine industry.

    Our Equestrian Centre has excellent training facilities, a good range of horses and a full calendar of onsite equine events and competitions. You’ll be taught be our highly motivated, dedicated team of qualified staff that offer a wide range of national and international industry experience.

    If you are hard-working, committed and looking to join a diverse and rewarding industry that offers hands on opportunities such as a coach, a competition groom or stud hand or maybe you’d prefer to explore sports science, events management or retail – then equine could be the course for you.

    Studying at the Rodbaston College also gives you access to a beautiful rural estate, perfect for practical maintenance tasks in the fields and riding alike.

  • Required qualifications

    To study at level 2 you must have at least 3 GCSE’s graded 3 and above, or equivalent qualifications.

  • What skills will I develop?

    This equine course is a vocational study programme that combines academic study and practical based learning. The course provides an excellent introduction to all aspects of equine care and equitation. You will develop the knowledge, confidence and industry skills required to join the equestrian industry.

    As well as learning about practical horse care and management, you will develop your knowledge of the horses anatomy and behaviour, you’ll explore the importance of health and welfare and feeding and nutrition and the impact this can have on the horses wellbeing and performance.

    You will improve your employability skills through work placement and training for extra qualifications such as British Horse Society exams. You will gain an insight into industry through a range of trips and visits, study tours and get advice and guidance from a wide range of visiting speakers and industry professionals.

    There is also time to work on your riding skills during the course and perfect your horse care ability on the college yard and stables.

    During the course you will also develop a working understanding of health & safety and be able to take this with you into the workplace to keep horses and others safe.

  • Work experience

    This course requires you to undertake a minimum of 150 hours (around 20 working days) of meaningful work experience. You do not have to have secured a placement to start the course but a good idea of where they would like to go would be an advantage.

    Industry experience is designed to further develop and enhance skills being taught during vocational sessions and is an important part of the study program.

  • English and maths

    If you are aged 16-18 and have yet to gain a GSCE level 4 or above in maths and English then the college will help you achieve this as part of your study programme. If you are 19+ and are looking to improve your maths & English then this to can form part of the course. The benefits of improving your skills in these qualifications are not to be underestimated and can lead to better employment prospects and higher earning potential in your chosen career.

  • Other important information

    The college equine yard is a ‘uniform zone’ – this can comprise of either South Staffordshire College branded clothing or plain dark jumper/polo shirt/jodhpurs.

    You will require yard boots, current standard riding hat and gloves and waterproofs and warm clothing are strongly advised for those winter sessions!
