  • Is this course for you?

    This qualification is for learners who are entering the equine sector, either as part of a college programme or as adults who are new to the sector.

    Based at Rodbaston College, it is a mix of theory and practical on our own equine yard and paddocks.

  • Required qualifications

    You will need to have a minimum of two grade 2’s or equivalent or a pass grade in a relevant Gateway qualification.

  • What skills will I develop?

    This qualification has health and safety as a mandatory unit, as this is key knowledge for working in the land-based (equine) sector.

    The optional units cover introductory knowledge and practical skills in horse care including handling and accommodation, feeding and watering, exercise and aftercare, and maintaining health of horses.

  • Careers

    Studying an equine course can eventually lead to a career as a:

    • Coach/Instructor
    • Charity Worker
    • Equine Rehabilitation and Therapy
    • Breeding/Stud Hand
    • Equine Journalism
    • Nutritionist
    • Professional rider

  • Work experience

    You will need to complete 60 hours of work experience as part of the qualification. This will need to be organised by yourself, however we can offer guidance where needed. It is advisable to obtain and begin your work experience placement at the beginning of your course.

  • English and maths

    You may need to continue studying maths and/or English which will be completed as part of your normal college timetabled week. Both English and maths will play a part in all aspects of the course including horses and their diets, and communicating information both verbally and written.

  • Other important information

    The college equine yard is a ‘uniform zone’ – this can comprise of either South Staffordshire College branded clothing or plain dark jumper/polo shirt/jodhpurs. You will require yard boots, current standard riding hat and gloves and waterproofs and warm clothing are strongly advised for those winter sessions!
