  • Is this course for you?

This is a general course in painting and drawing for learners with no or little experience in art or who want to develop and consolidate their existing skills by exploring a range of media, methods, and techniques. Learners will be supported by group, individual tuition, and demonstrations. Projects will vary in subject matter and themes. However, Learners who wish to work on independent projects may do so.

  • Required qualifications

No qualifications or experienced needed but more experienced learners will have the opportunity to develop their skills further.

  • What skills will I develop?

Learners will lean how to develop and improve their drawing and painting skills in the use of such formal elements as line, tone, colour and texture by a better understanding of how to measure something, achieve correct proportioning, model in light and shade and use colour effectively. Learners will learn how to approach subjects like still life, landscape, portrait, and themes like reflections. Leaners will also learn how to organise and construct an image from one or more sources, both primary (observation) and secondary (images).

  • Careers

On completion of the course learners may either consolidate their skills by doing drawing and painting at intermediate level, diversify onto related art subjects like pottery and sculpture or progress onto a higher-level course and onto gaining qualifications in art and design.

  • English and maths

Although the course is about visual communication, learners will learn key terms, encouraged to use appropriate vocabulary and to discuss their work and that of others. Learners will also learn about measuring, proportioning and perspective.
