  • Is this course for you?

This practical, supportive course is designed for learners who want to explore their creativity, build confidence and develop communication through art and design. It’s ideal for pre‑16 and 16–19 students, particularly those with SEND/ALN or who would benefit from a highly scaffolded, hands‑on programme with clear routines and plenty of tutor guidance. You’ll try out a range of creative activities, discover materials and techniques, and document your journey in a visual diary. There are no formal entry requirements—just an interest in art and design and a willingness to experiment, collaborate and reflect on your ideas. The qualification is delivered in a safe environment with structured tasks, step‑by‑step workshops and opportunities to engage with the creative community. The course is assessed through a single internally assessed component that is externally moderated, and the overall grade is Pass/Fail. This makes the programme accessible and focused on personal progress rather than exams, helping you to gain confidence and prepare for your next step in education.

Upon successful completion of this course, you will have achieved the UAL Entry Level 3 Certificate in Art and Design.

  • Required qualifications

There are no formal entry requirements for this course. An interest in exploring art and design is recommended. We will discuss any support needs prior to enrolment so we can plan appropriate adjustments. Places are offered based on your enthusiasm for the subject and your readiness to engage with practical workshops, collaborative activities and the visual diary process.

  • What skills will I develop?

You will learn how to generate and record ideas using verbal, written and visual communication; explore and experiment with art and design; and apply safe studio practices. You’ll investigate creative communities and practitioners, use your experiences to develop ideas, and produce creative outcomes. A key focus is maintaining a visual diary to evidence your exploration, development and final pieces. The course builds practical making skills, collaboration, independence and confidence, with themes that encourage sustainable thinking and inclusive references to the global majority.

  • Careers

Successful completion can support progression into a wide range of creative programmes (e.g. UAL Level 1 Award/ Diploma in Art, Design and Media, or related areas such as Creative Media, Music, or Performing Arts). The course develops transferable skills—communication, teamwork, problem solving and confidence—useful for further study, supported internships and future employment pathways in the creative industries and beyond.

  • Work experience

Learners will have the opportunity to engage in a range of activities throughout the academic year which may include simulated work briefs, live briefs set by employers, museum trips and/or community art projects.

  • English and maths

English and maths are embedded through studio routines and the visual diary: using key vocabulary, following instructions, sequencing processes, estimating and measuring, and presenting information clearly. Where needed, learners also study Functional Skills or GCSE English and maths alongside the course, with learning reinforced through practical art and design tasks (e.g. labelling materials, writing captions, planning steps, measuring and scaling).

  • Other important information

We promote safe working, inclusive practice and sustainability, encouraging re‑use and responsible sourcing of materials. Full details of qualification structure, assessment outcomes and moderation are set by UAL Awarding Body.
