  • Is this course for you?

    This course has been designed to provide you with in-depth knowledge and understanding of the evolution, behaviour, and training of domestic canines, including their care and welfare in kennels, homes, and boarding care.

    The course also includes learning about canine handling and transportation and the law relevant to the care and welfare of canines.

    Upon successful completion of this course, you will achieve the AIM Qualifications Level 3 Diploma in Canine Care, Behaviour and Welfare.

  • Required qualifications

    You should be aged 16 or above at the time you start the course and want to work in the canine care sector.

    To be accepted onto the course, you will need a minimum of 4 GCSEs at Grade 4 or above, one of which must be either English or maths, or equivalent level qualifications.

    Adult learners aged 19 and above are also accepted who have relevant industry experience.

  • What skills will I develop?

    Over the course of the year, you can expect to cover skills and knowledge related to the following units:

    • Canine Behaviour
    • Canine Care
    • Canine Evolution
    • Canine Handling and Transportation
    • Canine Learning Theories
    • Care of Canines in Kennels, Day Care and Home Boarding
    • Dogs and the Law
  • Careers

    On successful completion of the Level 3 Diploma in Canine Care, Behaviour and Welfare, you may progress directly into employment or self-employment in the canine care, behaviour, and welfare sector or progress to areas of higher learning in canine care, behaviour, and welfare.

  • Work experience

    Throughout the year, you will be required to complete a work experience placement of at least 150 hours which should take place in canine-related settings such as:

    • Animal Shelters
    • Boarding Kennels
    • Canine Hydrotherapists
    • Dog Groomers
    • Dog Trainers
    • Dog Walkers
    • Doggy Daycares
    • Pet Shops
    • Rescue Centres
    • Vets
  • English and maths

    If you don’t have a Grade 4 in either English or maths and need to top up, this can be done whilst at college and is a mandatory requirement for those who are aged 16-18 at the start of the course.

    A decent level of English will be required to complete assignments/essays which are the method of assessment for this course.

  • Other important information

    The facilities at Rodbaston College for canine courses include onsite kennels, The Dog House, an onsite dog grooming salon, Rodbaston Dog Grooming Academy, and a large rural estate for practical sessions such as dog walks and mock training classes.

    You will also have the opportunity to go on trips throughout the year, such as to Crufts, as well as welcome guest speakers from the canine industry into college.
