Teacher and group and learners
  • Is this course for you?

Have you thought about sharing your specialist subject knowledge or vocational skills by teaching them to others?

Have you considered a career as a teacher or trainer but are not yet ready to commit to a full teaching qualification?

Do you want to test out whether teaching would be a career for you by gaining further knowledge and developing your practice before embarking on a full teaching qualification?

Are you currently working as a teaching assistant, teaching support or trainer and want to develop your teaching skills?

If so, the Award in Education and Training is the qualification for you!

This 13-week programme will introduce you to the key aspects of the role of a teacher or trainer and can support progression to a full teaching qualification.

  • Required qualifications

No formal qualifications are required although it is expected that you have a good standard of English and IT as you will need to complete several assignments, written and submitted electronically. Good communication skills are necessary for the short teaching session (micro-teach) that you will deliver to your peers as part of the programme.

  • What skills will I develop?

You will develop knowledge of teaching and training and learn some strategies for successful delivery of knowledge and skills to support maximum learning for learners. You will develop an understanding of the role of a teacher/trainer and their responsibilities. You will develop your awareness of how to plan for inclusive learning and how and why to assess that learning has taken place. You will develop teaching strategies for the teaching of your own subject specialism. Through delivery of a micro-teach and by observation of other micro-teaches, you will develop your delivery skills in your subject area. These micro-teaches are delivered within the scheduled classes, so unlike full teaching qualifications, there is no requirement to have a teaching placement to complete this programme.

  • Careers

This qualification is an ideal first step for those new to teaching or those who wish to pursue a career in the teaching profession. It is a stepping-stone to a ‘recognised teaching qualification’. Gaining a level 3 Award in Education and Training can lead to progression to a level 5 Certificate in Education (Cert Ed) or a level 7 Post-graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) depending on your other qualifications. This is because it provides the basic skills and knowledge for these higher-level programmes. The College offers the Cert Ed and PGCE in partnership with Staffordshire University and so, for learners who wish to progress to these, tutors are able to support and guide them through the University application process.

  • English and maths

English and maths are embedded in the programme through classroom activities. There are also written assignments where a good standard of English is needed. Your micro-teach will require good communication skills.

  • Other important information

The course is a 13-week programme, one evening per week. There are two programmes per academic year. The first runs from November to January at Tamworth College and the second from February to June at Lichfield College. Both programmes run 6pm – 9pm on Tuesdays.
