  • Is this course for you?

If you want a career in accountancy, a professional qualification like AAT can set you on track to a range of future job opportunities, whether in bookkeeping, accountancy, auditing, tax or self-employment.

The Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) is an internationally recognised qualification. Employers frequently ask for potential employees to have achieved at least one level of the AAT qualification.

This is the third and final level of the full qualification and is designed for people who want to or are already working in accounts. It is a part-time course run over one day a week at Lichfield College.

  • Required qualifications

Applications are equally welcomed from people of all ages who have already gained Levels 2 and 3 in Accounting. Exemption can sometimes be granted from Level 4 Accounting by completion of certain qualifications (Please contact the accounts team if you think you may qualify for exemption). A Level 2 qualification in English and maths is also desirable.

  • What skills will I develop?

Throughout the duration of the course, students will complete both mandatory and optional units. These units will cover a variety of different areas that are associated with accounting, enabling students to widen their knowledge and skills in these areas.

The compulsory units to be completed are:

    • Applied Management Accounting
    • Drafting and Interpreting Financial Statements
    • Internal Accounting Systems and Controls

    The optional units selected are:

    • Audit and Assurance
    • Credit and Debt Management

Note: All assessments will be undertaken via controlled conditions and are assessed by AAT. All contain written answers and take approximately 5/6 weeks to assess.

  • Careers

This course will enable you to go onto a career in an accounting practice or management accountant industry related role.

If you successfully complete the qualification and meet work experience requirements you can apply for AAT full membership (MAAT status).

The AAT qualification is recognised by employers and the Professional Diploma in Accounting can lead to the following types of employment:

    • Assistant Financial Accountant
    • Cost Accountant
    • Commercial Analyst
    • Senior Finance Officer
    • Senior Insolvency Administrator
    • VAT Accountant
    • Tax Supervisor

The current job environment is very positive for accountants, who can show a diverse range of talents (particularly in technology) to add value to any organisation they might work for. The AAT syllabus is designed to showcase this range of talents.

  • Work experience

There is no requirement for you to be in work experience, however working in the sector does allow you to apply the knowledge, skills and behaviours learned.

Our AAT classes are made up of people of all ages and with varied experience. Many learners have little or no knowledge of accounting at all at the start of their course. Every year we see friendships made, confidence built and Accounting knowledge and skills developed.

  • English and maths

English and maths are integral to gaining employment and are included on every study programme to support your development and progression in these important skills. Although you may assume you need good maths skills to be an accountant, it is important that your English is at the required level.

Communication whether verbal or written is essential in today’s accountancy roles, so this is assessed in your exams as well as basic maths skills.

The level required of English and mathematics is what you would expect from someone working in the profession at this level i.e. a Level 2 qualification in both subjects.

  • Other important information

Course fees: In addition to the college fees, you will need to join the AAT and pay their one-off registration fee (currently £240). You will also be required to purchase textbooks. This will be explained to you at interview.

Expectations: It is essential that a minimum of 95% attendance is achieved for this course and that regular home study is completed, in order to achieve exam success.

What you need to bring to college: You will be expected to provide your own stationery and always attend college fully equipped for lessons with a textbook, course notes, note paper and writing implements.

IT: It is essential that you have access to a computer or laptop at home in order to complete homework and revision activities.
