Jisc honours digital trailblazers at South Staffordshire College
March 2026
South Staffordshire College is celebrating the success of two colleagues who have been recognised nationally as Jisc Community Digital Champions for 2026.
Steve Wileman, Head of Digital Learning, and Alison Fawdrey, English and maths Lecturer and Digital Learning Technologist, have been selected as part of a group of just 15 individuals across the UK recognised for their outstanding contribution to digital innovation and sector‑wide collaboration.
The Jisc Community Champions programme highlights individuals who go beyond their day‑to‑day roles to support others, share expertise and strengthen digital confidence across further and higher education.
Steve was recognised for his leadership in digital transformation, supporting organisations across education and industry to navigate rapidly emerging technologies such as AI, VR/AR and collaborative platforms. Through sharing practical frameworks and best practice, he has helped institutions overcome uncertainty and build confidence in adopting innovative digital solutions.
Reflecting on the award, Steve said: “Being recognised as a Jisc community champion is a real honour, and one that reflects the power of collaboration across our sector. So many organisations are still navigating the uncertainty that comes with emerging technologies, and I’ve always believed that openly sharing what works – and what doesn’t – is essential to moving forward together. This award isn’t just a personal achievement; it’s a celebration of the collective effort across South Staffordshire College, other colleges, businesses and partners who are committed to driving meaningful, confident digital transformation.”
Alison’s achievement celebrates both her teaching role in English and maths and her wider influence as a Digital Learning Technologist supporting Steve and colleagues across the college. Her work includes delivering sessions for Jisc, TechTober and the Chamber of Commerce, as well as speaking at the AI ThinkTank conference in Oxford. Known for her enthusiasm for ethical AI and her ability to simplify complex technologies,
Alison said she was humbled by the recognition, “Being recognised as a community champion is genuinely humbling. It feels like an acknowledgement of something I care deeply about rather than something I set out to achieve. I have a real passion for what I do and a strong belief in the power of sharing, collaboration, and generosity within digital and educational communities.”
As part of their recognition, Steve and Alison were recognised at Jisc’s flagship Digifest conference. At the conference, fellow champions from across the country came together to share insights and celebrate their achievements. This year’s champions were selected from 43 nominees by a panel of former winners and Jisc representatives.
The full list of community champions, finalists, and nominees is available on the Jisc website.
