October 2026
Motor vehicle student Alfie Gibbs, who studies at Tamworth College, which is part of South Staffordshire College, has been praised for his hard work, kindness and commitment while volunteering on the restoration of a historic cottage in Tamworth.
Alfie has been supporting work to restore Vergers Cottage, located behind St Editha’s Church. He joined the project alongside his parents, who also volunteer at the cottage.
Christine Harris from Opus Training, who is overseeing the restoration, contacted the college after being impressed by Alfie’s initiative and community spirit. Speaking about Alfie, Christine said: “Alfie’s exceptional attitude stood out from the moment he joined us. Whatever task he was given, he got stuck in without hesitation and showed a real desire to make a difference. His kindness has extended beyond his volunteering, too. When he has seen me at the cottage during the week, he has taken the initiative to come over, check that I am okay and ask whether I need any help. His hard work, compassion and initiative will stand him in excellent stead for the future.
Vergers Cottage is an important part of Tamworth’s history, and the restoration project is helping to preserve the building for the future. Through his volunteering, Alfie has been able to support a meaningful local project while gaining valuable practical experience.
Reflecting on his experience, Alfie said: “I wanted to get involved because I thought it would be a good opportunity to help with an important part of Tamworth’s history and give something back to the local community. I have really enjoyed helping others, learning new skills, and working alongside other volunteers. It has also taught me the importance of teamwork, patience, and taking pride in the work I do. It’s been great to see the progress we’ve made and know that we’ve played a small part in helping to restore the cottage for future generations.”
Ahmed Hussein, Faculty Director at South Staffordshire College, said: “I am incredibly proud of Alfie and the way he has represented South Staffordshire College, and Tamworth College in particular, through his volunteering. His commitment, kindness, and willingness to help others demonstrate the qualities we want to see in all our students. Opportunities like this allow students to develop valuable skills and confidence while making a positive contribution to their local community. Alfie has shown great initiative and community spirit, and it is fantastic to see him putting these qualities into practice outside the classroom”
The college is incredibly proud of Alfie and has presented him with a certificate to congratulate him on his outstanding community spirit and the positive difference he has made.
Alfie’s contribution shows how volunteering can give students the opportunity to build their skills, support their communities, and make a positive difference beyond the classroom.
