  • Is this course for you?

    This course is for those that have a passion for sport and are interested in pursuing a career in an ever-expanding sport, exercise and fitness industry. The fitness sector is a multi-billion pound industry that services over 1 million jobs within the UK in a range of disciplines, ranging from elite level through to grass roots and community development.

    The Level 3 course provides a mix of theory and practical preparing you for your next steps toward industry and/or university. The courses look to build knowledge at an A level standard helping to build academic skills, apply knowledge and gain practical experience. Our courses look to focus on your individual passions and prepare you for a successful career in the sports industry, we will look to build your confidence and develop the work readiness skills and wider attributes that will serve you well as a coach, instructor, personal trainer and within many other roles in the industry.

  • Required qualifications

    This course will require applicants to have:

    • 4 GCSEs at Grade 4 (C) or above including English or maths
    • 5 GCSEs at Grade 4 (C) or above excluding English or maths
    • Level 2 qualification in a related subject and English or maths at grade 4 (C) or above

     

    As well as these qualifications, applicants should have a strong interest in sport and demonstrate a commitment to succeed

  • What skills will I develop?

    On this course, you will develop the practical skills and knowledge that is necessary to prepare you for a range of jobs in the sports industry. This course will be undertaken over a period of 1 – 2 years depending on how successful you are in the first year.

    Across the course you can expect to cover a range of topics such as;

    • Practical team sports
    • Exercise, Health and Lifestyle
    • Organisation Sports events
    • Anatomy and Physiology
    • Coaching
    • Fitness training and programming

     

    In addition to the above topics that will be completed, you will learn skills that are required in any career choice, including health & safety, confidence building, social and practical skills, as well as English and Maths. During the course you will be required to take part in practical and fitness sessions both indoors as well as outdoors in order to develop skills. You will also have opportunity to lead on sessions and develop transferable instructing/coaching qualities.

  • Work experience

    Learners are expected to carry out 40 hours work experience over the academic year. This will be industry based but more information can be provided once learners start the course. Benefits of work experience:

    • Work Experience placements assist learners in their transition from school/college to work and aim to: ·
    • Provide learners with an opportunity to put college knowledge and skills into a real life environment ·
    • Give learners an insight as to what it is like to work in a realistic environment ·
    • Prepare learners for the demands and expectations of the working world ·
    • Help learners make informed career decisions on what their career path with entail ·
    • Helps learners mature, build confidence, resilience and those ‘all important’ life skills
    • Provide learners with appropriate knowledge, skills and attitudes concerning both paid and unpaid work

     

    Previous candidates have gained this experience from a range of areas in previous years, including volunteer coaching, teaching, physio clinic work and officiating in sports. Real working skills such as organisation, communication, teamwork will be developed of the placement, as well as specific knowledge such as best industry practices and key terminology.

  • English and maths

    English and maths make up a key component of learning across the college, on the course you will be looking at a range of key skills from spelling and pronunciation of key terminology in anatomy and physiology to the use of percentages and volumes in fitness training and testing and many more. Putting these at the core of the subjects help to develop a deeper understanding of the subjects and develop wider key skills in education.

  • Other important information

    A college sports kit is a requirement for the course, the bundle is ordered online upon successful enrolment on to the course through a local provider. It will consist of t-shirts, for both class and practical activities, jumper/top and jacket with optional items also available. Cost will be given on enrolment and delivery is dealt with by sports staff.

    There will also be external trips to various events, attractions and development opportunities, these details will be provided as the course moves through the year.
