  • Is this course for you?

This course is ideal for learners who want to develop practical construction skills and progress into employment within property maintenance, multi‑trades or the wider construction industry. It is particularly suited to those who enjoy hands‑on learning and want to build confidence across several trades rather than specialising in a single pathway.

You may be progressing from a Level 1 construction or maintenance course, or you may already have some relevant experience and want to formalise your skills with a nationally recognised qualification. The programme is designed to reflect real workplace activities and expectations, helping you understand how different trades work together across domestic, commercial and public sector properties.

Throughout the course you will work in well‑equipped workshops and realistic working environments, completing practical tasks that reflect industry standards. You will also develop key employability skills including time management, teamwork, communication and safe working practices. There is a strong emphasis on health and safety, professionalism and problem‑solving. If you are motivated, willing to learn and aiming to progress into work, an apprenticeship or further technical study, this course provides a strong foundation for a career in property maintenance.

  • Required qualifications

You will normally have a Level 1 qualification in construction, property maintenance or a related vocational area, along with GCSEs at Grade 3 (D) or above in English and maths, or equivalent. A clear interest in construction and maintenance trades is essential.

Applicants without formal qualifications may still be considered following an interview and initial assessment, where motivation, attitude and suitability for the course will be reviewed. All learners must be prepared for practical workshop‑based learning and committed to meeting expectations around attendance, behaviour and health and safety.

  • What skills will I develop?

During this course you will develop a broad range of practical property maintenance skills, covering key areas such as basic carpentry and joinery, plumbing and heating maintenance tasks, wall and floor tiling, decorative finishing and general building repairs.

Alongside practical skills, you will gain a strong understanding of health and safety within construction, the correct use of tools, equipment and materials, and how to interpret job instructions and specifications. You will learn how to work efficiently, professionally and safely, developing the confidence and technical accuracy required for real‑world maintenance roles.

  • Careers

Successful completion of the Level 2 Diploma can support progression into employment as a property maintenance operative or assistant within housing, facilities management or construction companies. Learners may also progress onto an apprenticeship in a construction or maintenance trade or continue their studies at Level 3 in a related subject.

This qualification supports career pathways such as property maintenance technician, facilities assistant, housing maintenance operative or multi‑skilled tradesperson, working for local authorities, contractors or private employers.

  • Work experience

Work experience is an important element of the full‑time study programme. You will be supported to complete meaningful, industry‑related work experience, which may include placements with local employers, maintenance teams or contractors. This helps you apply classroom learning in real working environments, develop confidence and build employability skills. The college’s work experience team will support you throughout the process.

  • English and maths

English and maths are essential skills within the construction industry. If you have not yet achieved GCSE Grade 4 (C) or above in English and/or maths, you will continue to study these subjects alongside your vocational programme. Sessions are designed to support progression and are linked where possible to real workplace scenarios to help develop skills needed for employment and further study.

  • Other important information

You will be required to wear appropriate PPE and work clothing, which will be discussed during enrolment and induction. Good attendance, punctuality and behaviour are essential to successfully complete the course. Assessment is carried out through practical tasks, assignments and observations in line with City & Guilds requirements. Ongoing support is available throughout the programme to help you succeed and progress to your next step.
