  • Course aim

    This apprenticeship is suitable for anyone who works as a Plumber, Domestic Heating Engineer, Domestic Heating Installer. A Plumber will normally be working in domestic premises or building sites.

    A Plumber is responsible for planning, selecting, installing, servicing, commissioning and maintaining all aspects of plumbing and heating systems.

    Work is generally based on building sites in all weathers, all year round but can often find themselves working in customers homes.

  • Course content

    The knowledge which underpins the required skills will allow a Plumber to demonstrate a thorough understanding of the principles of the installation of plumbing and heating systems. This includes accurate measuring, marking, cutting, bending and jointing metallic and non metallic pipework. Appliances and equipment can include gas,oil and solid fuel boilers as well as pumps, heat emitters, bathroom furniture or controls as part of a cold water, hot water, and central heating or above ground drainage and rainwater systems.

  • Course assessment

    The apprentice will attend college one day a week.

    The apprentice will study the core knowledge, skills and behaviours as laid out in the apprenticeship plan.

    By the end of this apprenticeship the candidate will have satisfied the requirements for registration as EngTech by the Engineering Council through The Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering (CIPHE) and or The Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) On completion of the health and safety assessment, as determined, by the assessment plan the candidate will have satisfied the requirements to obtain a Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) Card through the Joint Industry Board for Plumbing and Mechanical Engineering Services (JIB-PMES) at the appropriate grade. They will also be required to have achieved level 2 English and Maths (GCSE Grade 4/5 or C) prior to enrolment.

    Fees

    If you have less than 50 staff and the apprentice is between 16-18 then the apprenticeship will be fully funded, you will only need to pay for the apprentice’s wages. If you choose to recruit an apprentice who is 19 or above you will be required to pay 5% of the cost of the apprenticeship (the government will fund 95%)

    If you are a large employer with 50+ staff you will be required to fund 5% of the apprenticeships costs regardless of the age of the learner.

    Employers with a wage bill of over £3 million will pay the cost of the apprenticeship through the apprenticeship levy.
