  • Is this course for you?

If you have a desire to work in the childcare, health and social care or any caring profession then this is an ideal introductory qualification that can help you decide which route to pursue.

If you are electively home educated and of school curriculum year 10 or 11 South Staffordshire College may be able to offer you a place on our new and exciting Health and Early Years provision at Tamworth College.

This provision is focussed on young people that aspire to work in the care industry with an initial insight into caring for children.  The programme is a mix of hands on and classroom-based theory work and therefore expectations to fulfil both are essential.

Due to age restrictions work experience will not take place on this provision, this will be required upon the young person progressing onto our Level 2 CACHE provision, post 16, as it requires a full clear DBS.

  • Required qualifications

No formal qualifications are required, but you will have to undergo a selection process with our ‘Head of 14-16 Provision’ to ensure you are both suitable for the programme and registered as ‘Electively Home Educated’.

Attitude, commitment to learning and to attending college fully is required to be considered a place on this programme.  We currently have limited with places as it is a pilot year for this provision and will not tolerate non committed learners.   A genuine passion for working in the childcare or care industry is essential.

Attendance is paramount to achieving and to be taken very seriously. Learners that attend less than 90% will have their offer of course placement revoked and removed from programme.

  • What skills will I develop?

Typical units for this qualification could include:

    • Healthy Lifestyle
    • Responsibilities of new parents
    • Practical Health and Safety when with young children
    • Providing a safe and hygienic environment for a young child
    • Play and learning in the home
    • Peer mentoring
    • Contraception information
    • Eating Healthy
    • Routines for a young child
  • Careers

Our specialist staff have incorporated an element of ‘Health and Social Care’ into this programme which will inform the young person a wider CEIAG for progression routes into either pathway for industry (Health and Social Care or Childcare).

Further progression opportunities will depend on the learner’s abilities, but could include a broad range of destinations as outlined in Foundation Learning including:

    • Level 1 Award, Certificate and Diploma in Caring for Children
    • Level 1 Award, Certificate and Diploma in Health & Social Care
    • Any other subject Level 1 Award, Certificate or Diploma
    • GCSEs
    • Supported employment
    • Independent living
  • English and maths

GSCE English and maths will be delivered during the three days so attendance and commitment is essential.

English and maths will also be developed as part of the full vocational course content with embedded features.
