Motorsport – Level 2

Required qualifications

Applicants are normally expected to hold a Grade 4 (or equivalent) in maths and English and have successfully completed a relevant Level 1 Motor Vehicle or Motorsport qualification.

Other relevant qualifications or experience may be considered on an individual basis, at the discretion of the tutors.

A strong interest in motorsport, a positive attitude to learning and the ability to work safely and as part of a team are essential for success on this course.

What skills will I develop?

You will develop practical motorsport skills, underpinning knowledge and employability behaviours through completion of the IMI Level 2 qualification.

You will gain experience in:

• Inspecting and preparing motorsport vehicles
• Removing and refitting vehicle components
• Working with engine, transmission and chassis systems
• Using tools, equipment and diagnostic processes safely
• Following workshop procedures and health and safety requirements
• Understanding roles and expectations within a motorsport environment

These units develop safe working practices, core vehicle maintenance techniques, teamwork and an understanding of how the automotive and motorsport industries operate.

Careers

The Level 2 Diploma in Motorsport Maintenance is designed to support progression rather than direct entry into specialised motorsport roles.

Successful completion will allow learners to progress onto Level 3 Motorsport or Automotive qualifications. From there, learners may move on to an apprenticeship or employment within the automotive or motorsport sector.

This staged progression allows learners to build skills, knowledge and confidence at an appropriate pace in line with industry expectations.

Work experience

Preparing you for the working world is an important part of your programme.

Work experience placements provide you with the opportunity to develop your skills, gain a better understanding of the automotive and motorsport industries, and give you an insight into what it is like to work in a professional environment. Placements can be highly rewarding and may lead to references, part-time work, apprenticeships or future employment opportunities.

Once you start your course, you will receive further guidance on work experience opportunities. However, we encourage you to begin thinking about placements early and seek opportunities that align with your career goals.

Work experience helps you develop essential employability skills such as teamwork, communication, timekeeping and professionalism. You will also have the opportunity to reflect on your experience and receive feedback from employers to support your development.

English and maths

In the motorsport and automotive industry, having strong maths and English skills is essential. Whether you are measuring components, interpreting technical information or communicating with team members, these skills help you work accurately and professionally.

At South Staffordshire College, you will have the opportunity to improve these skills by working towards GCSE or Functional Skills qualifications, where required. Our teams work closely with your motorsport tutors to help you apply these skills in a practical and relevant context.

Maths skills support accurate measurements, calculations and diagnostics, helping to ensure vehicles are safe and perform correctly. English skills support clear communication, whether you are following instructions, completing job records or working as part of a team.

Developing these skills will not only support your course but will also improve your confidence and employability within the automotive and motorsport industries.

Other important information

To ensure you are fully prepared for your course, there are a few essential items you will need:

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):

• Steel toe-cap safety footwear
• Suitable workwear (e.g. work trousers and appropriate tops or overalls)

Stationery:

• Pens and pencils
• Notepad and folder for organising your work

Tools:

• There is no requirement for learners to provide their own tools, as these are available within our well-equipped workshops. If learners wish to purchase their own tools, staff can provide advice.

We understand that purchasing these items can be difficult. A bursary scheme may be available to support eligible learners, and our team will be able to assist with applications.

Having the correct equipment will help you stay safe, organised and ready to take part in all aspects of the course.
