  • Is this course for you?

    If you are looking to start your career in the motor trade or would like to gain an understanding of vehicle basics then this is the course for you, you will develop a good foundation of practical skills and technical knowledge of light vehicle systems and operation.

  • Required qualifications

    Grade 2 or above in English and maths or relevant experience.

  • What skills will I develop?

    During the course, you will cover a range of topics that will give you the skill and knowledge to be successful in the Motor vehicle sector. Introduction to the basic vehicle operating systems, Engines, suspension, tyres, braking systems etc. where you will use a range of hand tools to carry out the removal and refit of components form these systems.

  • Careers

    After completion of the Motor Vehicle Studies Diploma Level 1, you will have developed the skills and knowledge to continue to study at college and apply for a place on Level 2 Motor vehicle, or apply for an apprenticeship as a Vehicle servicing technician, Fastfit/tyre technician, vehicle valeter or move into other sectors such as a motorcycle or heavy vehicle Technician.

    As a fully qualified vehicle technician job salaries can range from £18k to £40k per year depending on skill level, time in service, and additional qualifications you may hold such as Hybrid training, Mot tester trained or air conditioning qualifications.

    Job opportunities within the sector include but are not limited to Vehicle technician, Tyre technician, Valeting Technician, Service advisor, Parts advisor, Sales advisor, Workshop Controller, leading on to after sales manager. (Some job roles may require additional in house training).

  • Work experience

    Candidates are expected to complete a mandatory 30 hours of work experience that is related to the course. This is to be completed in a timely manner, Candidates will have the opportunity to develop communication and organisational skills by applying and being interviewed for work experience and securing a placement.

  • English and maths

    English and maths are an important aspect of working in the motor trade. working to timescales, costing customer jobs, writing detailed jobs cards and good communication skills are required to be successful in this sector.

  • Other important information

    Learners will need to be equipped for all sessions, this will include an A4 folder to keep work and handouts safe, A4 notebook, Pen, Pencils, Coloured pencils for drawing diagrams, Ruler, Rubber. During theoretical sessions, you may be permitted to use a device during sessions to research information when instructed to do so.

    Workshop sessions will require steel toe capped boots, overalls and safety glasses, gloves and barrier cream will be provided. Learners will also need a small pocket-sized notebook a pen/pencil for making notes, sketches and taking technical information while working through practical tasks.

    Learners without the required PPE will not be able to participate in practical sessions. No food, hot drinks or fizzy pop are to be consumed in the classrooms or workshop areas. You will also have a Tutorial on your timetable. In this session, you will learn about social, personal and moral issues. You will also have a 1:1 meeting with your Personal tutor each term where you can discuss any issues and targets can be set to help you work towards your goals and reach your full potential.
