  • Is this course for you?

Do you want a career in Engineering? Do you enjoy the process of design and manufacturing? If this sounds like something you are interested in, then start your career in Mechanical Engineering at South Staffordshire College. Learn a range of engineering skills such as machining, computer aided design, CNC (Computer Numerical Control) and hand fitting skills in a modern engineering environment.

  • Required qualifications

You will need a minimum of grade 4 in Maths, English and Science to start at level 2.

  • What skills will I develop?

Whilst studying for your engineering career, you will also develop skills such as communication and technical machining skills. You will also gain a broad and in-depth knowledge of basic engineering techniques and methods. Studying at SSC will enable you to develop your skills in our new million-pound engineering lab, you will have access to Numatics, hydraulic, CAD computer aided design, CNC and the very latest XYZ millers and lathes, as well as 3D printing and design.

  • Careers

On completion of level 2 it opens a whole range of possibilities for your next chosen steps to a career in engineering, including apprenticeships in industries such as aerospace, automotive, manufacturing and service sectors. A qualified level 2 engineer can expect to be earning £25000 to £35000 a year once fully qualified.

On completion you will have the option to continue your education to level 3, as a full-time student. If you wish to continue your education as a full-time student, you can study up to level 5 before completing a year at a local university to complete a full degree.

If you are looking at becoming a mechanical engineer, electrical engineer, maintenance engineer, tool maker, designer and much more, study with us and we will get you there.

  • Work experience

Our dedicated Work Experience team are here to help and support you in finding a meaningful work experience opportunity.
Recent studies have shown that employers consider work experience to be extremely desirable. Whilst qualifications are hugely important, employers also require candidates to have skills and experience necessary for the workplace.

Preparing you for the working world is very important to us, so that you may be successful in your next step.

Work experience placements provide you with the opportunity to develop your skills; have a better understanding of the industry you want to work in and give you an insight into what it is like to be employed. They can also be great fun and very rewarding and you may even be offered a great reference, a part–time job, holiday working hours, apprenticeships, or full-time jobs.

Once you start your course you will be provided with further information about work experience programmes, but it is never too early for you to start thinking about work experience placements and finding an employer who will offer you an opportunity.

Work experience is an opportunity for you to gain experience in your chosen career path in order to develop relevant skills. Equally, it also helps you to acquire employability skills, attitudes and behaviours that are essential for future employment. There will be an opportunity for you to reflect on your performance during work experience and you will receive some form of reference/feedback from the employer.

The number of hours that are required can vary. Visit the work experience section of the website for more details.

  • English and maths

Communication and the ability to apply mathematics to solve engineering problems is key to a career in Engineering. Having a solid understanding of both English and Maths is an important part of your course and is a requirement to progress through to higher education.
You will be expected to attend GCSE Maths and English if your grades are below 4. This is part of your course and will greatly benefit you. As well as GCSE, you will also be taught engineering maths this is more aligned to maths in an engineering world.

  • Other important information

A level 2 course at South Staffordshire College will prepare you for a career in the engineering world. The course has lots of practical elements and as such you will be required, for hygiene purposes, to purchase safety boots, safety glasses and overalls.

Although the course has practical elements as an engineer you will always be theory to underpin your practical knowledge, you will require a folder, pens, pencils and a scientific calculator.

Finance support is provided through bursary should you need this. Our friendly Learner Services team will be happy to help.
