  • Is this course for you?

This course is suitable for both adults aged 19+ and school leavers aged 16-18 who want to progress in the dog grooming industry and work as a professional dog groomer.

Over the course of the year, you will build on the skills taught on our Level 2 Dog Grooming course looking at breed-standard trimming, mastering scissor skills, and modern ways of grooming, as well as preparing to work in the professional industry.

    The course is split between:

    • Practical sessions once a week in the salon (different days and times are available)
    • Theory sessions once a week online (on a Wednesday evening)

On successful completion of this course, you will have achieved the City & Guilds Level 3 Diploma in Dog Grooming.

  • Required qualifications

You must already hold the City & Guilds Level 2 Certificate for Dog Grooming Assistants.

If you do not have this qualification, please apply for our Level 2 Dog Grooming course first and after passing Level 2 you can then progress onto Level 3.

  • What skills will I develop?

This course covers the practical skills and theoretical knowledge needed to work as a professional dog groomer including:

    • Health and safety, legislation and codes of practice for the dog grooming industry
    • Preparing, styling and finishing a dog
    • Health checking and handling a dog in a dog grooming environment
    • Customer service and record keeping in a dog grooming environment
  • Careers

After completing this course, you can progress into full-time employment, and a Level 3 qualification could help you gain a job as a senior dog groomer, professional stylist, or manager of a dog grooming salon, or alternatively you could become self-employed by starting your own dog grooming business.

  • Work experience

Throughout the year, you will be expected to complete a minimum of 60 hours of work experience with a qualified dog groomer and will be responsible for sourcing your own work experience placement.

This is to get the best out of your qualification and put the skills learnt during your practical sessions into a real-life work setting.

  • English and maths

English is embedded within the course by means of communication with clients, peers, and lecturers, as well as reading and writing within set assignments, whilst maths is embedded within the course by means of timekeeping, dilution rates, blade lengths and handling payments.

If you are aged 19+ and would like to gain a recognised qualification in English, maths, or both, you can explore the range of GCSE and Functional Skills courses we offer for adults at the college here.

If you are aged 16-18 and don’t have a Grade 4 or above in English, maths, or both, you will be required to attend weekly GCSE classes during your time at college.

  • Other important information

Depending on your individual circumstances, you may be eligible for financial support to help you cover both the cost of the course itself as well as the cost of the equipment that will be essential for the course.

If you have already completed our Level 2 Dog Grooming course, you will need to top up the kit you’ve already got from Level 2 to include some additional essential pieces needed for the Level 3 course.
