    South Staffordshire College’s new Level 5 Diploma in Web Application Development is designed to take you and your career to the next level. This course will be your fast-track to a career in technology and coding.

    This one-year course will provide you with a hands-on practical course that will focus on development of your coding skills and designed around the design, build and test of a fully functioning app that will become part of your portfolio to prospective employers.

    This course is designed to provide you with a Level 5 qualification in Web Application Development and is delivered for 3 hours per week online (although, 10-12 hours of independent study required per week over 36 weeks or 22-26 hours of independent study required per week over 2 weeks).

    The qualification is made up of 4 units that progress you through front-end and back-end processes, learning coding process and flow. The units are:

    User Centric Frontend Development

    This unit aims to provide you with the knowledge and skills needed to build a front end web application. It includes understanding the principles of responsive design, documentation and effective layout of content.

    Interactive Frontend Development

    This unit aims to develop knowledge and skills needed to build a dynamic, interactive Frontend web application. It includes understanding user input and control when interacting with a web application. It also includes understanding the principles of manual testing for debugging.

    Data Centric Development

    This focuses on understanding and developing the practical skills to build a Back-End web application. Topics covered include data storage and data management using relational and non-relational databases.

    Full Stack Frameworks with Django

    You will build on their existing skills and learn how to integrate them effectively to build a Full Stack web application. The unit covers the use of frameworks, APIs, automated testing, persistent storage, user authentication and ecommerce functionality.

    The course will be delivered via a Learning Management System (LMS with the intention to take you through from the basics of web development through to creating fully-fledged e-commerce applications while at the same time covering broader topics they will need to be ‘job-ready’ at the end of the course.

    Your LMS is supplemented by taught delivery where each module contains video content, lectures, research/reference material, quizzes, and challenges as you progress through the course which will be supported via your tutor.

    The programme also involves live interaction with your tutor for one session a week (Thursday evening 6pm-9pm) for a live lecture. This will allow you to gain support and guidance for the work you are doing and to prepare for assessments and to make sure your app development is on track.

  • Required qualifications

    You are required to have English and maths at level 2 or you are able to demonstrate you are working at or above L2. You also must successfully complete the Coding Challenge Initial assessment to be considered for the programme.

  • What skills will I develop?

    This course is designed to deliver the practical skills to fully design, develop, build, and test a web-based software application. The content aims to develop your abilities and proficiency in the most relevant and sought-after coding languages and tools for both front and back-end development.

    You will learn industry-ready skills to take up roles across software/web application developer, full-stack/front-end/back-end developer, QA engineer or Software support engineers.

    The course is divided into nine main topics which include:

    • Introduction to programming
    • HTML Essentials
    • CSS Essentials
    • User-Centric Frontend Development
    • JavaScript Essentials
    • Interactive Frontend Development
    • Python Essentials
    • Backend Development
    • Full Stack Frameworks with Django

    Through these topics you will be asked to do four milestone project assessments which come at the end of the User Centric Frontend Development, Interactive Frontend Development, Backend Development and Full Stack Frameworks with Django modules.

  • Careers

    This qualification is designed to open you up to a career in technology and programming and provide you with the skills and confidence to apply for one of the tens of thousands of unfilled vacancies in technology advertised in UK every week.

    It also provides opportunities for progression for graduates both within the technology sector and other sectors including health, construction, engineering, finance, education, transport, entertainment, retail, and hospitality.

    On graduating the course, you could for example apply for one of the following roles:

    • Junior/Associate Frontend Developer
    • Junior/Associate Backend Developer
    • Junior/Associate Software Developer
    • Junior/Associate Full Stack Developer
    • Junior/Associate Quality Assurance Engineer
    • Software Support Engineer
  • Work experience

    This is not required as part of this programme.

  • English and maths

    You need to be working at least level 2 for English and maths.

  • Other important information

    • You must be aged 19 or over.
    • You must complete the 5-step Coding Challenge before progressing onto the main programme,
    • While there is no requirement for you to have prior skills, knowledge or understanding of software, coding, or programming you must however have an aptitude for technology and IT as this is a Level 5 programme of study.
