  • Is this course for you?

    This course is aimed at learners who want to pursue a career as a fitness instructor in the context of gym-based exercise, and have a passion for health and fitness. Candidates will develop the necessary skills and knowledge required to enable them to plan and instruct safe and effective programmes of exercise. This course will give you a qualification that is highly recognised within the fitness industry and by employers, as a key measure of achievement. The YMCA qualification is a vocationally related qualification (VRQ) at level 2 on the qualification and credit framework (QCF). It also provides access onto the register of exercise professionals (REPs) at Level 2.

  • Required qualifications

    This course is suitable for candidates who have experience either in participating or teaching fitness. You should have experience in using gym equipment and have an active interest in the fitness industry.

    You must be aged 18 or over before the start of the course and meet one of the following criteria; Four GCSEs grade D or above or for mature candidates appropriate work experience/sporting background.

  • What skills will I develop?

    Anatomy and physiology – Including the heart and circulatory system, the respiratory system, structure and function of the skeleton, musculoskeletal system, postural and core stability, the nervous and energy systems and their relation to exercise

    How to maintain health, safety and welfare in a variety of fitness environments, including the safeguarding of children and vulnerable adults

    How to programme and instruct safe and effective exercise for a range of clients, the health benefits of physical activity and the importance of healthy eating

    How to communicate with clients effectively, and motivate clients to adhere to an exercise programme.

    The skills and knowledge required to plan and prepare a gym-based exercise programme with apparently healthy adults – both individuals and groups. This may include young people in the 14-16 age range, provided they are part of a larger adult group. Client groups also covered are older adults, ante and postnatal clients and disabled clients provided the relevant contraindications and key safety guidelines are observed

    On completion of this course you will be qualified to work as a gym instructor

    Further education:

    • Level 3 personal trainers awards,
    • Specialist level 4 fitness qualifications
    • Dedicated class instruction courses e.g spin, les mills, kettlebell

    Within the West midlands there has been a growth in the number of gyms and fitness Spa’s with currently around 2000 jobs within fitness instructing.

  • Work experience

    There is no requirement for work experience on the course, however it is encouraged to be in contact to potential employers on the course to gain knowledge of working practices and understanding. There is an element of the course where you will be working with a real client designing their programme and gained real experience through them.

  • English and maths

    English and maths make up a key component of learning across the college, on the course you will be looking at a range of key skills from spelling and pronunciation of key terminology in anatomy and physiology to the use of percentages and volumes in fitness training and testing and many more. Putting these at the core of the subjects help to develop a deeper understanding of the subjects and develop wider key skills in education.

  • Other important information

    This is predominately a distance learning qualification, although will require some face to face contact to cover practical content, sit exams and other related assessments.
