The Art & Design History programme is spread over three terms and consist of a series of introductory slide presentations and discussions that provide an overview of the history of Western art. Each term however can stand alone. The autumn term will cover the period from Classical Antiquity to Art Nouveau & Art Deco. The Spring term will cover the period from The Bauhaus to Abstract Expressionism. The summer term will cover the period from Pop Art to Post-Modernism. The course(s) are designed to cover a range of topics and issues to address the question ‘what is art?’

  • Required qualifications

No qualifications or experienced needed but more experienced learners will have the opportunity to develop their knowledge and skills further.

  • What skills will I develop?

By the end of the three term courses the learner will gain a general understanding of Western art from antiquity to the end of the 20th century, of specific movements and related issues and of artwork in its historical context. In addition, the learner will have developed critical thinking and analytical skills in looking at a work of art.

  • Careers

On completion of the course learners may either consolidate their skills and knowledge by studying a different programme in art and design history, diversify onto related art subjects like pottery and painting or progress onto a higher-level course and onto gaining qualifications in art and design history.

  • English and maths

Learners will learn key terms, encouraged to use appropriate vocabulary and to discuss and debate a work of art. Learners will also learn about measuring, proportioning and perspective.
