    Get practical, hands-on experience working with vehicles and earn while you learn with a motor vehicle apprenticeship.

    This apprenticeship is suitable for:

    • New staff or existing employees looking to develop new skills
    • Those who service and repair light vehicles, such as cars and vans
    • Anyone working in a large dealership or a smaller independent garage

    The apprenticeship lasts for 3 years and combines both on-the-job and off-the-job training. You will attend Rodbaston College one day a week, with the remainder of your practical training taking place alongside experienced staff within an organisation. Throughout your apprenticeship, the college’s apprenticeship practitioner will visit periodically to review your progress.

    Upon successful completion of this apprenticeship standard and end-point assessment (EPA), you will achieve a Level 3 Motor Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician (Light Vehicle) qualification.

  • Required qualifications

    You must be aged 16 or over when you start the apprenticeship; however, there is no upper age limit.

    To be accepted onto the apprenticeship, you must have achieved either a minimum Level 2 qualification in English and maths, such as Functional Skills, or GCSE English Language and maths at Grade 4/C or above.

  • What skills will I develop?

    The knowledge and skills gained through the apprenticeship will enable a technician to demonstrate a thorough understanding of all vehicle systems.

    The day-to-day work ranges from replacing simple parts through to solving complex faults with the use of diagnostic methods and equipment. The tasks faced are constantly changing, driven by the introduction of ever more complex technologies and diagnostic techniques.

    You will cover units including:

    • Routine servicing and inspection procedures
    • Steering and suspension geometries
    • Electrical circuit calculations
    • Braking systems
    • Engine and transmission systems
    • Gear calculations
    • Vehicle emissions and legal requirements
    • Alternative fuels
    • Hybrid and electric systems

    You will also gain an IMI Level 3 Award in Automotive Refrigerant Handling (EC842-2006) (VRQ) to be compliant with the European Union’s F-gas regulations.

  • English and maths

    It is expected that you will have already achieved your English and maths qualifications, however both English and maths will be embedded into your apprenticeship.

    English:

    • Reading and understanding workshop manuals, service schedules, and manufacturer instructions
    • Writing clear and accurate job reports detailing work carried out and parts used

    Maths:

    • Measuring brake disc thickness, tyre tread depth, and component wear against manufacturer specifications
    • Converting units

    Rodbaston College offers excellent motor vehicle training facilities designed to give apprentices hands-on experience in a realistic workshop environment. The college’s dedicated motor vehicle workshop is equipped with industry-standard tools, equipment, and training vehicles, including the latest four-wheel alignment and ADAS calibration equipment, as well as state-of-the-art engine rigs to support fault-finding and diagnosis.

    Apprentices will also have the opportunity to develop specialist skills in electric and hybrid vehicle technologies within the modern Net Zero Energy Training Centre, alongside training in alternative fuel technologies, including high-voltage systems and hydrogen fuel cells.

    You will be expected to purchase a uniform and wear it on your college day.
