  • Is this course for you?

    This course will provide you with an in-depth understanding of the knowledge and skills needed when working directly with children and young people in school and college environments. It covers all aspects of specialist support including planning, delivering and reviewing assessment strategies to support learning alongside the teacher; bilingual support; special needs support; and personal development and reflective practice.

    This course is intended for those employed in a teaching assistant or equivalent role and also provides progression from the level 2 course. It is an expectation that you will have hands-on experience of working in this type of setting.

    You will cover topics such as Safeguarding, communication, supporting with Maths, Literacy and ICT and supporting bilingual and SEN learners.

    You will attend college for one day a week with the course delivered by experienced and knowledgeable staff who have themselves worked in this role. You will carry out your own reading and research and have work to complete out of college hours.

    You will be observed in your placement by an experienced assessor.

  • Required qualifications

    English and maths GCSE grade C or 4 and above or Functional Skills at Level 2.

  • What skills will I develop?

    • Understanding of relevant policies/legislation and codes of practice.
    • Good understanding of areas of learning, e.g. literacy, numeracy, science, SEN or Early Years.
    • Use of other equipment technology – video, photocopier.
    • Well-developed interpersonal skills to be able to relate well to a wide range of people.
    • Work constructively as part of a team whilst being able to demonstrate initiative.
    • Good communication skills.
    • Effective use of ICT to support learning.
    • Ability to reflect on own practice.
    • How to support speech, language and communication.
    • How to support children and young people during transitions.
  • Careers

    This course can lead to employment as a Teaching Assistant in a school setting or as an entry to University and teacher training.

    Teaching Assistant Level 3 Ft: £18,065 – £18,426 (32.5 hours: £16,076 – £16,358 pro rata, May 2020) approx. Though salaries may vary between schools.

    There isn’t a national pay scale for TA salaries. Most schools tend to go with wages set by the local authority (LA), although this varies depending on the type of school.

  • Work experience

    1 day in college between 9.30am – 3.00pm.

    A work placement which can be Primary, Secondary or SEN school.

    Must be supporting in Year 1 or above.

  • English and maths

    Maths and English will be embedded throughout your course through taught sessions and you will use ICT skills for research and completing homework.

  • Other important information

    You will need:

    • Enhanced DBS check costing £40.00
    • Access to computer/printer/internet
    • Textbook costing £25.99
    • Stationary ie. binder, dividers, paper, pens
