  • Course aim

    This apprenticeship is suitable for anyone who works in advanced manufacturing and engineering and works as an Engineering Technician, Machinist, Mechatronics Engineer or Toolmaker.

    Engineering Technicians take responsibility for the quality and accuracy of the work they undertake within the limits of their personal authority. They also need to be able to demonstrate a core set of behaviours in order to be competent in their job role, complement wider business strategy and development. This will enable them to support their long-term career development.

    There are 5 specialist pathways within this apprenticeship:

    • Technical Support Technician
    • Machinist – Advanced Manufacturing Engineering
    • Mechatronics Maintenance Technician
    • Product Design and Development Technician
    • Toolmaker and Tool and Die Maintenance Technician

    All applicants will need to have at least 4 GCSE’s Grade 4/5 (C) or above with at least one in either maths or English.

  • Course content

    Engineering Technicians require a range of specialist knowledge and skills.

    Specialist Knowledge will involve understanding:

    • mathematical techniques, formulas and calculations
    • the practical and theoretical uses of machines
    • the structure, properties and characteristics of common materials used in manufacturing
    • the safe operation, correct selection, and the application of a range of hand tools
    • safe operation and operating principles of a range of complex machinery
    • the set up and operation of the machinery and equipment efficiently and effectively
    • the methods and techniques of evaluating data and documentation

    Specialist Skills:

    • reading and interpreting relevant data and documentation
    • applying methods and techniques to produce, assemble, disassemble repair and/or maintain equipment
    • manufacturing components
    • undertaking testing to confirm correct operation, and of the effectiveness of repairs and maintenance activities carried out
    • undertaking equipment/asset care and/or Preventative Planned Maintenance processes and procedures
    • carrying out complex fault diagnosis and repair activities
    • contributing to the business by identifying possible opportunities for improving working practices, processes and/or procedures

    You will also cover and provide evidence for a range of behaviours, which includes Personal Responsibility, Working in Teams, Effective Communication, Problem Solving and Continuous Personal Development.

  • Course assessment

    Apprentices will attend college on a day release programme for 42-48 months. Following a training period of skills and technical knowledge development, all apprentices will be required to achieve the following qualifications:

    • A Level 2 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Foundation Competence)
    • Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Competence)
    • Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Knowledge)
    • Apprentices without Level 2 English and maths will need to achieve this level prior to taking end point assessment

    Fees

    If you have less than 50 staff and the apprentice is between 16-18 then the apprenticeship will be fully funded, you will only need to pay for the apprentice’s wages. If you choose to recruit an apprentice who is 19 or above you will be required to pay 5% of the cost of the apprenticeship (the government will fund 95%).

    If you are a large employer with 50+ staff you will be required to fund 5% of the apprenticeships costs regardless of the age of the learner.

    Employers with a wage bill of over £3 million will pay the cost of the apprenticeship through the apprenticeship levy.
