  • Is this course for you?

    If you enjoy practical work and have an eye for detail, electrical installations could be a great career for you. Electricians install and maintain the equipment needed for the safe and efficient use of electricity, including fitting and repairing electrical circuits and wiring.

    During this course, you will study various units surrounding electrical installations and assessment is through a combination of online multiple-choice exams and practical assessments.

    Study in our purpose-built electrical workshops to gain an insight into working within the electrical trade.

  • Required qualifications

    To start at Level 2 you will need a grade 4 in both maths and English. A grade 4 in physics is also desirable or have completed the level 1 programme.

  • What skills will I develop?

    You will develop fantastic problem-solving skills along with a vast understanding of how electrical systems are wired and how they operate.

    This knowledge will be across multiple systems including an introduction to lighting, power, and control systems. Workshop sessions are very hands, and you will be working with multiple tools that you will be using within the trade by stripping and terminating a variety of cables.

    In theory sessions you will start to learn about all aspects of electrical systems with an introduction to the many maths and science equations you will need moving forward in order to calculate problems.

    You will also learn about the health and safety side to the trade and all the rules and regulations needed to work as a full-time electrician.

  • Careers

    Successful completion of the level 2 course will qualify you as an electrician’s mate/improver. You can then progress to our Electrical Installations (Building and Structures) Level 3 course to become fully qualified or why not take an apprenticeship and earn with you learn.

    Becoming an electrician can be one of the most enjoyable and interesting jobs in the building and engineering industries.

    Once you have become qualified you can work all over the world. Electricians trained in the UK are some of the best in the world and often manage the electrical installation system build, managing teams of local electricians. For this role you can expect to be rewarded with a level of pay approaching 75k. Other roles within this industry are electrical engineer, domestic electrician, lighting technician, broadcast engineer, telecoms technician and maintenance electrician.

    Once you start your course you will be provided with further information about work experience programmes, but it is never too early for you to start thinking about work experience placements and finding an employer who will offer you an opportunity.

Equally, it also helps you to acquire employability skills, attitudes and behaviours that are essential for future employment. There will be an opportunity for you to reflect on your performance during work experience and you will receive some form of reference/feedback from the employer.

    Whilst at South Staffordshire college, you will be given the opportunity to improve your maths and English skills by continuing to study at GCSE or Functional Skill level. We have a great team working alongside your main course tutors with the skills and knowledge to improve your maths and English skills.

  • Other important information

    Buying tools and uniform are not required to take this course, however if you would like to build up on your own tools you are able to purchase these and bring them bring them with you.
