  • Is this course for you?

    This course enables learners to gain and develop the skills, knowledge and experience of Counselling, in order to achieve professional status as a professional counsellor.

    The training integrates the Person Centred approach with the study of other theoretical approaches such as Psychodynamics, Attachment and CBT.

    It is a two-year part-time counselling practitioner qualification for learners (19 years+).

    It will enable trainees to gain the knowledge, skills, ethical mindset and capability to work as a therapeutic counsellor.

    This course includes the completion of a minimum of 100 hours of clinically supervised client hours.

  • Required qualifications

    You must have obtained a Level 3 diploma or certificate qualification in Counselling or a Recognised equivalent Prior Learning. Training must be on an in-class course. DISTANCE LEARNING COURSES WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.

    Have a Level 2 English qualification.

    Learners need to be at least 19 years old to start the qualification.

    You will be asked to attend an interview, where your readiness to progress to professional practitioner status will be discussed.

    You will also be asked to provide a reference from your most recent Level 3 Counselling course tutor if you did not complete your Level 3 counselling diploma at SSC.

  • What skills will I develop?

    There are 7 Mandatory Units to complete:

    • CDL4U1 – Professional Organisational Issues in Counselling
    • CDL4U2 – Counselling in a Diverse Society
    • CDL4U3 – Counselling Theory
    • CDL4U4 – Advanced Counselling Skills
    • CDL4U5 – Self-awareness for Counsellors
    • CDL4U6 – Research Methodologies in Counselling
    • CDL4U7 – Counselling Placement
  • Careers

    Successful completion of this course means that you will be able to work as a professional therapeutic counsellor in private practice and within an agency.

    You can progress onto courses such as:

    • A counselling degree
    • Post Graduate Certificate in Counselling
    • Start to process of gaining accreditation from a professional counselling Body such as The British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) or The National Counselling Society (NCS)
  • Work experience

    You must complete 100 hours minimum of one-to-one, formally contracted counselling in agency settings.

    The tutor must approve this workplace placement.

  • English and maths

    Learners will need to have a good level of English and Maths basic skills as they will be writing self-reflective journals, reports, essays, presentations and the external exam.

    A level 2 certificate in English is required.

  • Other important information

    Additional course requirements:

    • Personal Therapy – Trainees are required to attend a minimum of 10 hours of personal therapy per diploma year. This is funded by the learner. Your counsellor must have at least a level 4 Diploma in counselling and needs to have already completed their 100 hours in placement. They must also have professional membership with either BACP, NCS, UKCP or a professional body of equal standing.
    • Counselling placement – Trainees must complete a minimum of 100 hours of client hours during the 2-year course and have appropriate supervision to pass the course. You are required to find a suitable training placement once you have passed your Fitness to Practice in year one of the course.
    • Supervision for client work – Trainees will need to have a minimum of 1½ hours of individual supervision per month (or the equivalent if you have group supervision.) while you are on placement. This is funded by the trainee.
    • Professional counselling body student membership – required for placement
    • Professional Liability Insurance – required for placement
    • DBS Check – required for placement
