  • Is this course for you?

    This is a two year part-time qualification for people who want to become professional counsellors.

    This course will give you the knowledge, skills and abilities to work as a therapeutic counsellor within an agency context.

    You will be trained through in a humanistic integrative model with elements of CBT, Person-Centred and Psychodynamic therapy.

    The course is delivered one day a week over two years.

  • Required qualifications

    You must have obtained both a Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills and a Level 3 qualification in Counselling Skills. These must be in-class courses, NOT distance learning courses.

    Learners need to be at least 19 years old to start the qualification.

    You will be asked to attend an interview, where your readiness to progress to professional practitioner status will be discussed.

    You will be asked to provide a reference from your most recent counselling tutor.

  • What skills will I develop?

    You are required to pass 7 mandatory units:

    • Working ethically, safely and professionally as a counsellor within an agency.
    • Working within a counselling relationship
    • Working with client diversity in counselling work
    • Working within a user-centred approach to counselling
    • Working with self-awareness in the counselling process
    • Working within a coherent framework of counselling theory and skills
    • Working self-reflectively as a counsellor
  • Careers

    Successful completion of this course means that you will be able to work as a professional therapeutic counsellor – initially within the context of an agency’s service in both health care and non-medical settings.

  • Work experience

    You are required to complete 100 hours minimum of one-to-one, formally contracted counselling with at least five different clients in agency settings.

    This workplace experience placement must be approved by the college.

    You must secure an appropriate placement by the end of year 1 in order to progress to Year 2 of the diploma.

  • English and maths

    Learners will need to have a good level of English and maths basic skills as you will be writing self-reflective journals, reports, essays, presentations and the external exam.

  • Other important information

    Additional course requirements:

    • Personal Therapy – Trainees are required to attend a minimum of 10 hours of personal therapy per diploma year. This is funded by the learner.
    • Counselling training placement – Trainees must complete a minimum of 100 hours client hours with supervision to pass the course. You are to find a suitable training placement once you have passed your Fitness to Practice in year one of the course.
    • Supervision – 1 hour of supervision is required for every 8 client hours.
    • Professional counselling Body Student Membership – required for placement
    • Professional Liability Insurance – required for placement
    • DBS Check – required for placement
