    Do you want to work with children? Are you interested in making the difference to the next generation? Can you inspire children to learn in a fun and inspiring way? Then this course is the right one for you.

    This is an exciting new course for anyone who wants to gain experience of working with children from the ages of 0 – 5 years. You will gain both the knowledge and practical skills of an early year’s practitioner. You will have the opportunity to attend placement weekly working with different age children. We need you to have good communication skills, a caring and positive attitude, to be well organised and be motivated to learn.

  • Required qualifications

    You are required to have a grade 4 in English and 3 GCSE’s at a grade 3 including maths.

  • What skills will I develop?

    Whilst at college you will study the following units:

    1. Roles and Responsibilities of the Early Years Practitioner
    2. Health and Safety of Babies and Young Children in the Early Years
    3. Equality, Diversity and Inclusive Practice in Early Years Settings
    4. Safeguarding, Protection and Welfare of Babies and Young Children in Early Years Settings
    5. Understand How to Support Children’s Development
    6. Support Care Routines for Babies and Young Children
    7. Support the Planning and Delivery of Activities, Purposeful Play Opportunities and Educational Programmes
    8. Promote Play in an Early Years Setting
    9. Support Well-Being of Babies and Young Children for Healthy Lifestyles
    10. Support Babies and Young Children to be Physically Active
    11. Support the Needs of Babies and Young Children With Special Educational Needs and Disability
    12. Promote Positive Behaviour in Early Years Settings
    13. Partnership Working in the Early Years
    14. Support the Needs of the Child in Preparing for School

    You will meet a variety of guest speakers who are working in the childcare profession. You will gain work gain experience of working with children aged 0 – 5 years in a variety of early years settings

    We also take part in fundraising activities throughout the year and have trips planned.

  • Careers

    Once qualified a Level 2 Early Years Practitioner across the Early Years Workforce

    Learners may work under supervision in a variety of roles such as:

    • Nursery practitioner
    • Classroom assistant
    • Pre-school practitioner

    Further study

    Level 3 Apprenticeship – L3 Diploma for the Early Years Workforce.

    Technical Certificate in Childcare and Education (EYE)

    Teaching assistant L3- Cache Level 3 in Supporting Teaching and Learning

  • Work experience

    You will attend placement twice a week working with children from the age 0 – 5 years. You can attend a day nursery, an early setting and a school setting and will be assessed in your setting on your practical skills.

    You will be expected to source your own placement and will need to complete a total of 250 hours of work experience within the academic year, split between two age ranges. You will have access to a work placement officer for support with this once you have joined the course.

    Due to the nature of the work experience on this course, you will be required to have a clear criminal background check because you will be working with children who are classed as vulnerable people. If you are concerned, please talk to one of the team during the information session.

  • English and maths

    All learners who have not achieved a grade 4 in maths and English Language will continue with their studies whilst at college. Maths and English skills play a vital part in both the practical element of your course and also in sharing your knowledge with the children you will be working with.

  • Other important information

    All learners on an Early Years course are required to have a DBS. We will help you during your induction to complete an online application, the cost of the DBS is currently £44 but this is funded by the college.

    Whilst on placement we expected learners to wear the college uniform of a purple polo shirt with the college logo, black trousers and flat black shoes. You have the option also of purchasing a college fleece if you require one.

    All our uniforms are purchased externally and we have suppliers in Tamworth, Lichfield and Cannock.
