  • Is this course for you?

This is an introductory course for those with an interest in business that will provide you with the knowledge, understanding, and skills of the different elements of a business environment.

Whatever career direction you choose to follow there will be elements of business across a range of sectors, and you will learn about the theoretical concepts and professional practice used across industry as a whole.

Studying this course will also give you the potential opportunity to progress to further study at Level 3, or to progress to employment in a wide range of job roles across the business sector.

On successful completion of this course, you will have achieved the Pearson BTEC Level 1/Level 2 First Extended Certificate in Business.

  • Required qualifications

To be accepted onto the course, you will need a minimum of 3 GCSEs at Grade 3 or above, one of which must be maths, as well as a Grade 4 in English Language.

  • What skills will I develop?

The course units offer an introduction to essential business knowledge and over the course of the year you will have the opportunity to cover skills related to the following topics:

    • Enterprise in the Business World
    • Finance for Business
    • Promoting a Brand
    • Sales and Personal Selling
    • Principles of Marketing
    • Small Business Planning
    • Work Experience in Business

This course will also develop your employability skills such as researching, presenting information effectively, self-management, teamworking, problem solving, communication, and working to deadlines, as employers will require these skills in your future career.

  • Careers

Upon successful completion of the course, you will gain a widely recognised Level 2 qualification and progression routes could include:

    • Level 3 qualifications, specifically our Level 3 Business or Level 3 Business and Finance courses
    • An apprenticeship, in areas such as Business Administration, Content Creation, Customer Service, Human Resources, or Team Leading
    • Employment within the business industry, for example entry level job roles within the sector
  • Work experience

Our dedicated Work Experience team are here to help and support you in finding a meaningful work experience opportunity.

Recent studies have shown that employers consider work experience to be extremely desirable. Whilst qualifications are hugely important, employers also require candidates to have skills and experience necessary for the workplace.

Preparing you for the working world is very important to us, so that you may be successful in your next step.

Work experience placements provide you with the opportunity to develop your skills; have a better understanding of the industry you want to work in and give you an insight into what it is like to be employed. They can also be great fun and very rewarding and you may even be offered a great reference, a part–time job, holiday working hours, apprenticeships or full-time jobs.

Once you start your course you will be provided with further information about work experience programmes, but it is never too early for you to start thinking about work experience placements and finding an employer who will offer you an opportunity.

Work experience is an opportunity for you to gain experience in your chosen career path in order to develop relevant skills. Equally, it also helps you to acquire employability skills, attitudes and behaviours that are essential for future employment. There will be an opportunity for you to reflect on your performance during work experience and you will receive some form of reference/feedback from the employer.

  • English and maths

You will continue to improve your English and/or maths skills in timetabled lessons alongside your course, and if you plan to progress to a Level 3 course you will need to demonstrate progress in your skills in English and/or maths by the end of the year.

As part of the course you will develop your English and maths skills through the use of Century during tutorials. There are a wide range of units that will require use of English and maths. You will also develop your research skills through independent research tasks.
