    Construction is a booming industry with lots of jobs and career opportunities. #CreateYourCareer with us to become a successful bricklayer.

    You will be working with experienced staff to learn the traditional, but much sought after trade of bricklaying. The college has close links to many construction companies and the training experience within our on-site workshops means that you will use the latest construction tools and materials to gain industry level skills so that you will know exactly what to expect when you start your career.

    You will visit building exhibitions and building sites as part of your studies and you can also complete a CSCS Health & Safety test through the college so that you are ready to start work on-site.

    We have two locations perfectly located at each end of the A5 making your journey an easy one either by public transport or by your own mode of transport. If you do happen to live a little out the way, Rodbaston College provides a transport service for you to take advantage of.

  • Required qualifications

    You will need to have successfully completed the Level 1 in Bricklaying course that is also available to study with us.

  • What skills will I develop?

    You will study be assessed in the following subjects:

    • Health, safety and welfare in construction
    • Principles of building construction, information and communication
    • Carrying out Solid Walling
    • Carrying out cavity walling activities
    • Setting out masonry structures
    • GCSE/Functional skills (English & Mathematics)

  • Careers

    South Staffordshire College offers progression onto the next level of a full-time course. Other possible opportunities would be to undertake an apprenticeship in bricklaying to become a fully qualified tradesperson.

    Once qualified you could work on-site for a building constructor or start your own building business and carry out new builds and repairs on a variety of construction projects. The list in endless.

    Recent studies have shown that employers consider work experience to be extremely desirable. Whilst qualifications are hugely important, employers also require candidates to have skills and experience necessary for the workplace.

    Preparing you for the working world is very important to us, so that you may be successful in your next step.

    Work experience placements provide you with the opportunity to develop your skills; have a better understanding of the industry you want to work in and give you an insight into what it is like to be employed. They can also be great fun and very rewarding and you may even be offered a great reference, a part–time job, holiday working hours, apprenticeships, or full-time jobs.

    Once you start your course you will be provided with further information about work experience programmes, but it is never too early for you to start thinking about work experience placements and finding an employer who will offer you an opportunity.

    Work experience is an opportunity for you to gain experience in your chosen career path in order to develop relevant skills. Equally, it also helps you to acquire employability skills, attitudes and behaviours that are essential for future employment. There will be an opportunity for you to reflect on your performance during work experience and you will receive some form of reference/feedback from the employer.

  • English and maths

    Whilst at South Staffordshire college, you will be given the opportunity to improve your maths and English skills by continuing to study at GCSE or Functional Skill level. We have a great team working alongside your main course tutors with the skills and knowledge to improve your maths and English skills.

  • Other important information

    Students will need to purchase protective overalls and toe-protective footwear as well as basic stationery. Support is provided through bursary should you need this. Our friendly Learner Services team will be happy to help.
