Early years learners from South Staffordshire College shine with two wins and two runners up prizes in West Midlands skills competition

April 2025

Early Years skills competiton winners from South Staffordshire College

Today, our early years learners from Cannock and Tamworth College travelled to Solihull College to take part in a West Midlands cross-college education and childcare skills competition.

During the competition, learners from across the West Midlands studying early years showcased skills learnt in the classroom in an early year’s literacy challenge.

The competition challenge gave learners across the Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3 competitions the chance to showcase their creativity and knowledge by designing innovative curriculum packs inspired by children’s books; each aimed at supporting literacy development in the early years.

The competition also allowed the learners to apply their understanding of child development whilst building key skills valued by employers within the early years sector.

Teaching and Learning Coach, Katie Small said “It’s been so exciting to be part of another Cross-West Midlands competition. I’ve had the opportunity to contribute to both the planning and in-house judging to decide which of our learners went on to compete in this competition. It’s been incredible to witness the high level of skill and enthusiasm from all the students involved. The dedication and passion these learners bring to the competition is exactly why I love being involved in organising and supporting these events”.

We are incredibly proud to announce that South Staffordshire College learners won two categories and two runner-up prizes during the competition.

Huge congratulations to Tamworth College learners Erica Bramble and Jessica Dodd who won the category 1 competition.

Well done to Summer Fletcher and Lili Betts from Tamworth College who won the category 2 competition, hotly followed by Ellie Lindsay and Brooke Wilkes from Cannock College achieving the runner up prize.

Congratulations to Isabelle Curley and Jamie Lea Williams who were recognised as runners up in category 3.

Well done to Elizabeth Angell-Parsons, Sydney Harvey and Sienna Brough also competed in the challenge today for South Staffordshire College.

Jo George, Curriculum Manager at South Staffordshire College said “Well done to all South Staffordshire College learners who took part in the competition today, you presented your ideas with confidence, clearly communicated the value of your story-based resources, and truly impressed the judges with your passion, teamwork, and professionalism”.

Many thanks to all the staff who made this event possible today and special thanks to our early years teachers for preparing our learners for the competition.
