Trade leaners on work experience with Cannock Council

South Staffordshire College has partnered with Cannock Chase Council to create a work experience programme to provide valuable hands on experience to learners studying various trades at the college.

As a result of the partnership, learners studying carpentry, plumbing, electrical and bricklaying are benefitting from regular work experience within the Housing Maintenance team and Property Services team at the Council, to support with the successful achievement of their course.

Learners also benefitted from hearing a presentation from the Council and a surveyor, where they learnt about surveying as a career and the potential routes they should take after completion of their studies.

Nirmal Samrai, the Council’s Head of Housing and Corporate Assets, said “I am delighted that the Housing team and the college have created this successful partnership.  It is vital that students get the chance of hands on experience to help them with future employment, once they have finished their studies.”

Andy Roper, Plumbing Lecturer, said “The college would like to thank Cannock Chase Council for providing our learners with this invaluable work experience opportunity within its housing team.

“The partnership with the Council has allowed learners to hear from other organisations within the Council’s supply chain – such as Rapley’s – through a variety of toolbox talks’ delivered at Rodbaston College.

“The toolbox talks have enabled our learners to hear from experts in the sector and to gain a deeper understanding of how maintenance works are received, planned, organised and then carried out for customers of Council.”
