    Do you have a passion for flowers and all things floral? Do you want to create works of art that are admired by others? Here at South Staffordshire College, we are passionate about bringing the skills and knowledge you need if you would like to pursue a career within the floristry industry.

    At Rodbaston College we have purpose-built floristry classrooms that exceed industry standards and allow you to develop and hone your skills in the best setting possible. Your day at college will include practical sessions as well as theory work to give you the skills you need to start in the industry.

    Fresh flowers are used every week to practice and perfect displays and creations, with some materials also being sourced from the estate gardens.

    If you are looking to improve on existing skills or even if you are starting with little knowledge this course is a great steppingstone towards a career in floristry.

    The course is assessed by both practical and theory assessments.

    As this is a part time course, you will be required to allow time at home to complete some of the assignments.

  • Required qualifications

    Due to the part time nature of this course, no formal qualifications are required. However, a reasonable level of written and numeric ability will be discussed at interview.

  • What skills will I develop?

    This course covers a wide variety of topics and skills based assessments that allows you to develop a greater understanding of both the practical element of a florists trade as well as understanding the wider opportunities and possibilities the industry offers.

    A range of bouquets, displays and creations develop not only artistic interpretation but also cover the practical knowledge required to perfect such skills to the highest possible standard. There is also background knowledge to cover such as purchasing, marketing and sourcing creations and the costs involved.

    The course is made up of four units:

    • Introduction in Art and design
    • Costings, conditioning, flower and foliage identification
    • Tied arrangements
    • Floral arrangements

    This is a well rounded course balancing skills, knowledge and harnessing passion.

    No specific uniform is required for the course, tools and equipment are provided.

    Careers within the floristry industry can lead to becoming a:

    • Floral Designer
    • Shop Manager
    • Florist Manager
    • Florist
    • Small Business Owner
    • Wedding Florist
    • Design Teacher

    There is no work experience requirement to pass this course, however engaging with industry in a meaningful way greatly improves employability prospects.

  • English and maths

    If you are ages 16-18 and have yet to gain a GCSE grade 4 or above in maths and English then the college will help you achieve this as part of your study programme. If you are 19+ and are looking to improve your maths & English then this to can form part of the course. The benefits of improving your skills in these qualifications are not to be underestimated and can lead to better employment prospects and higher earning potential in your chosen career.
