Beauty Therapy – Level 1

Required qualifications

To be accepted onto the course, you will need a minimum of 3 GCSEs at Grade 3 or above, including English and maths.

You will need to be an enthusiastic and dedicated learner who is passionate about the beauty industry, and willing to learn and try new skills.

What skills will I develop?

Over the course of the year, you will explore basic treatments and develop both your practical skills and essential knowledge on a range of units including:

• Introduction to the hair and beauty sector
• Presenting a professional image in a salon
• The art of photographic make-up
• Providing basic manicure treatment
• Providing basic pedicure treatment
• Follow health and safety in the salon
• Working with others in the hair and beauty sector
• Create a hair and beauty image
• Salon reception duties
• Nail art application
• Skin care
• Basic make-up application
• Themed face painting

You will also gain a VTCT Skills Level 2 Award in Preventing Contact Dermatitis.

Careers

Once you have completed the Level 1 Diploma in Beauty Therapy, you can take all of the transferable skills learned throughout the year and progress on to our Level 2 Diploma in Beauty Therapy.

Completing our Level 2 course would then open you up to a world of opportunity and a wide range of careers.

Work experience

Work experience is a compulsory aspect of the course, and throughout the year you will be required to complete a work experience placement of at least 40 hours within a salon.

Through work experience, you will learn valuable interpersonal skills, such as independence, confidence, and commercial awareness, and the placement is designed to harmonise the theory you will learn in class and the real-world applications of the course.

English and maths

English and maths qualifications are an integral part of the working world and will help you to prosper. If you don’t have a Grade 4 or above in English, maths, or both, you will be required to attend weekly GCSE classes at college alongside your beauty course.

Within our Level 1 course you will also develop your English and maths skills through client consultations, the costing of treatments, taking bookings, and working as part of a team.

Other important information

When you begin your journey as a trainee beauty therapist, you will be expected to wear a uniform and purchase a kit which will become your tools to success. The college expects all learners to arrive to every class with all of the required equipment, uniform, and a determination to work.
