  • Is this course for you?

If you want a career in accountancy, a professional qualification like AAT can set you on track to a range of future job opportunities, whether in bookkeeping, accountancy, auditing, tax or self-employment.

The Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) is an internationally recognised qualification. Employers frequently ask for potential employees to have achieved at least one level of the AAT qualification. AAT qualifications are valued by employers as vocational and technical qualifications that effectively prepare students for the world of work and for working specifically in accountancy and finance roles.

This is the second level of the full qualification and is designed for people who want to or are already working as accountants. It is a part time course run over one day.

  • Required qualifications

Applications are equally welcomed from people of all ages who have already gained Level 2 in Accounting. Exemption is granted from Level 2 Accounting by either completion of certain qualifications, or in certain circumstances e.g. employment experience. (Please contact the accounts team if you think you may qualify for exemption).

  • What skills will I develop?

Level 3 is a qualification in its own right. The level 3 units will cover a variety of different areas that are associated with accounting, enabling students to widen their knowledge and skills in these areas.

Included is the basics of creating a set of final accounts for sole traders and partnerships, relevant knowledge of accounting standards and ethics, indirect tax, business awareness and management accounts.

You will sit four mandatory exams in:

    • Financial Accounting: Preparing Financial Statements
    • Management Accounting Techniques
    • Tax Processes for Business
    • Business Awareness

The exams are spread throughout the year and are all computer based and set by the AAT. All must be passed to gain the full certificate.

Teaching is carried out both in the classroom and electronically via the college’s learning platform. In addition, the AAT provide an online support platform once you join as a member.

  • Careers

On successful completion students may progress onto Level 4 AAT Professional Diploma in Accountancy. Learners may also consider an apprenticeship or seek employment in the industry.

The AAT is an excellent foundation to a career in an accounting practice or management accountant industry related role. It is also possible to undertake further study and gain chartered accountancy status through ACCA, CIMA or ICAEW following level 3 or 4 AAT.

If you successfully complete the AAT qualification and meet work experience requirements you can apply for AAT full membership (MAAT status).

The AAT qualification is recognised by employers and the Advance Diploma in Accounting can lead to the following types of employment:

    • Assistant Financial Accountant

    • Finance Officer
    • Tax Assistant
