Speaking with one of our male Health & Social Care students

June 2021

Jamie Lee Maddax Health & Social Care Student

We recently caught up with Jamie Lee Maddax who is a male student on our Health & Social care course. Jamie joined Health & Social Care in September 2020 after completing his Level 2 certificate in Public Services with aspirations to become a paramedic. Throughout his course and after having the opportunity to explore the variety of roles available within health care, Jamie now aspires to become a Public Health Nurse.

Jamie’s course tutor Hayley Parr said that Jamie is: “hardworking and conscientious, has a 100% attendance and punctuality record and has never missed a submission deadline. Jamie has consistently achieved A grades throughout the academic year, successfully building strategies that suit his specific learning difficulties and dyslexia, overcoming personal challenges to ensure that he plans his work effectively to meet his aspirational grades and take steps closer to his chosen profession.

As Jamie’s subject knowledge grows so has his self-esteem and confidence. Jamie is well liked and respected by his peer group, offering support through his role as digital mentor and is always on hand to guide others (and staff!) over their challenges through remote delivery and the navigation of the college VLE and google classroom to access resources”.

We asked Jamie a few questions about his course and his future career plans:

What is your career aspiration?

“My career aspiration is that I want to be an infection control nurse so I can help create plans to help and support an individual and get them into the routine that makes sure they meet all their needs”.

Could you describe your journey at South Staffordshire College?

“My journey at college has been long and hard but this experience has made me more confident over time as I learned that my first course was not the best for me and my future career as a nurse”.

What successes have you had?

“The successes that I have are that I am achieving an A* overall and that I have made better bonds with the people around me”.

What are your next steps?

“The next steps for me are that I must continue my course for the second year and meet the requirements for university and make sure that I get accepted to my top choices”

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

“I see myself working on the nursing ward of the field that I want to go into and meet the goals that are set by my colleagues and setting up my own business that helps the community and gives others opportunities to better themselves”.

Jamie is due to start a block placement in June at Linden Lodge. Jamie is very much looking forward to gaining hands on experience and further developing his knowledge of the principles of care. Jamie plans to return in September to complete his Level 3 Extended Diploma and has begun exploring UCAS routes to study Public Health and Community Wellbeing at University.

Congratulations to Jamie for his hard work over the past year and we want to thank Jamie for his time as well.
