Preparing to Work in Schools – Level 1

  • Is this course for you?

    Are you considering a career working with children, perhaps as a teaching assistant?

    Are you thinking of working in a school setting? Do you want to update your knowledge of working in a school?

    Whether you are a young person wanting to extend your education, a mature student looking for a change of career, returning to work after a career break or already working in a school environment and would like to gain a formal qualification to progress your career, then this course is for you.

    This level 1 qualification is accredited by NCFE CACHE. It prepares you for further learning and training whilst helping you to develop an understanding of the teaching and learning in a school setting.

    The course is part-time. You will need to attend college for 2 ½ hours a week, during childcare friendly hours of 9.30am to 12.00pm.

  • Required qualifications

    This is a level 1 course and although there are no formal entry requirements you must have a keen interest in the subject, a good level of English and the ability to work independently.

  • What skills will I develop?

    This level 1 course will help you to develop an understanding of the knowledge and skills required to become a teaching assistant. To achieve this course of study you will need to successfully complete 3 units:

    • Understand schools as organisations
    • Understand how to keep children and young people healthy, safe and well.
    • Understand how to communicate with children, young people and adults.

    Our tutors will be working with you and support you throughout the course to help you to develop your English skills, writing and research skills, team working skills and self-confidence.

  • Careers

    This course prepares you to progress onto the level 2 Award in Supporting Teaching and Learning and the level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning. Your tutor will be able to provide you with advice and guidance on other suitable programmes of study. 

  • Work experience

    This is a class-based course at college. You do not need to be working or volunteering in a school to achieve this qualification.  However, if you would like to gain valuable experience in a school then our tutors can give advice on how to search and apply for work experience. 

  • English and maths

    During the course our tutors will support you to develop your English skills in a friendly environment. You will be taught relevant topics through activities and discussions such as undertaking independent research, note taking and team working. Your tutor will assess your work by written assignment. There are no exams.

  • Other important information

    This level 1 course is free.
