  • Is this course for you?

Do you want to work with children? The level one course is a good starting point for your career in Early Years.

This course is designed to give you an insight into working with young children up to the age of 5 years 11 months. The course will support you in gaining knowledge of young children through a range of assessment tasks. You will build a portfolio of information as you progress through the course ranging from ‘supporting babies to play’ to ‘finding out about forest schools’.

Alongside the course we will be developing your skills in English and maths to support you in progression in your career in Early Years.

  • Required qualifications

You will need 3 GCSEs at grade E or 2 /3s or above including English and maths.

You will also need a clear DBS.

  • What skills will I develop?

At the start of the course, you will explore human growth and development as this is fundamental to all the other units. We will then progress onto how we can support children in the learning environment and how to keep them safe. You will explore the benefits of forest schools, craft activities and technology for young children. Our lessons are not all theory based and we plan a range of activities to inspire your learning.

    • Children’s Play and Leisure Activities in the Community
    • Sharing Learning Experiences With Children
    • Human Growth and Development
    • Investigating a Vocational Area
    • Listening to and Talking With a Young Child
    • Healthy Eating for Families
    • Practical Health and Safety When With Young Children
    • Finding Out About Forest Schools
    • Craft Activities for Young Children

We have a range of guest speakers who come to the college to share their knowledge with you and also plan trips to support your learning.

The course is designed to also develop your personal skills in communication, creative problems solving, self-management and collaboration. For communication, we will support you to enhance your listening and speaking skills. Class activities are planned to help you to problem solve and be creative, develop leadership and work in a team. Regular tutorials will support you in self management where we encourage staying positive and aiming high.

  • Careers

After completing the level 1 course you can progress onto the level 2 course in Early Years or apply for an apprenticeship at level 2.

  • Work experience

We recognise the importance of work experience to support your knowledge when working with children. All learners will attend an Early Years placement for a minimum of 30 hours over the academic year. We will support you in finding a placement that is near to your home.

  • English and maths

English and maths are embedded into your course, and you will also attend GCSE maths and English every week to improve your skills.

  • Other important information

The Early Years course is all coursework, there are no formal exams.

As part of your study programme, you will have a group tutorial every week and will be supported by your own personal tutor. You will attend college for three days a week and this will include your maths and English lessons.
