  • Course aim

    This Apprenticeship is ideal for any of your employees that provide healthcare support in a range of healthcare settings. Healthcare support workers work as part of a team providing high quality and compassionate care to individuals.

    Which job roles is this Apprenticeship suitable for?

    Healthcare settings may include hospitals, community clinics or health centres, individuals’ homes, nursing/care homes, hospices, mental health settings and GP surgeries.

    Apprentices without level 1 in English and maths will need to achieve this level and take the test for level 2 English and maths prior to taking their end-point assessment

    You will need to be employed for a minimum of 30 hours per week in a relevant job but we can assist you in finding a placement.

  • Course content

    The apprentice will study the core knowledge, skills and behaviours as laid out in the apprenticeship plan, This will include Communication, Health Intervention, Person Centre Care and Support, Dementia, cognitive issues and mental health, Basic life support, Physiological measurements, Personal and people development, Duty of Care, Safeguarding, Infection prevention and control, Moving and handling, Equality and diversity

    What qualifications will I get?

    Apprenticeship Standard for Health Care Support Worker.

    Care certificate – this is a vocational component and will demonstrated through a portfolio of evidence.

  • Course assessment

    Apprentices are required to attend college once a week, the rest of the training will take place in the workplace with in-house training by the employer. Our healthcare assessor will visit and observe the apprentice in practice

    Knowledge – Your apprentice will attend college based classes and be able to access the college’s online learning environment where specially prepared learning materials are available 24/7.

    Skills and Behaviours – This training will be led by your employer in the workplace. Our assessors will visit your workplace to observe you undertaking your normal on-the-job duties, and complete reviews to make sure you are staying on track with your work. In conjunction with you and your employer, the assessor will develop a delivery plan to show what knowledge units are being studied, what evidence needs to be prepared, as well as the time and date of the assessor visits.

    End Point Assessment

    Multiple Choice Question Paper – During this 60 minute test, apprentices are presented with a range of real-life scenarios about which they are required to answer questions in a multiple choice format (60 questions).

    Portfolio and Interview – The apprentice assembles a Portfolio of Evidence that demonstrates their learning and development activities. This will include written, audio and video evidence that showcases their on-programme learning and achievements. Following submission of the Portfolio, the IEPA will digitally connect with the apprentice for a 30 minute engagement that enables the apprentice to further showcase their knowledge, skills and behaviours from across the standard.

    Fees

    If you have less than 50 staff and the apprentice is between 16-18 then the apprenticeship will be fully funded, you will only need to pay for the apprentice’s wages. If you choose to recruit an apprentice who is 19 or above, you will be required to pay 5% of the cost of the apprenticeship (the government will fund 95%)

    If you are a large employer with 50+ staff, you will be required to fund 5% of the apprenticeship costs regardless of the age of the learner.

    Employers with a wage bill of over £3 million will pay the cost of the apprenticeship through the apprenticeship levy. For more guidance on this please refer to our website
