Required qualifications

We require you to have a minimum of 4x GCSE’s including a Grade 4 in maths/English and 3x Grade 3’s to include maths/English.

A current and up to date enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check (carried out through South Staffordshire College) at a cost of £44.00.

What skills will I develop?

Throughout the course you will develop the skills required to work in the health and social care industry. You will develop empathy, communication skills, active listening skills and self-confidence. You will work as part of a team to develop team working skills and understand the importance of time management, flexibility and a strong work ethic. You will also develop resilience, how to deal with pressure, accept and use constructive criticism and maintain a positive mental attitude.

Through your coursework, you will develop your knowledge of the history of health and social care, technical language, person-centred care, standards and legislation. Your knowledge of the sector will expand and broaden to give you the opportunity to explore areas of health and social care that you never even knew existed!

Work experience

Carrying out work experience supports and enhances your learning. It provides opportunities for you to apply the knowledge you are gaining to practice, to receive feedback and reflect on your experiences. It also gives you the opportunity to observe professional practice in action and gain valuable employability skills. You will be required to complete a journal that details your experience and offers the opportunity to reflect on your experience.

Throughout the year, you will be expected to attend placement for a minimum of one day per week and accumulate a minimum of 40* hours (*subject to change).

English and maths

Maths and English is used every day in health and social care, whether it be writing reports, making notes on a handover, administering medication, taking temperatures, calculating body mass index, measuring weight, completing fluid intake and output charts, planning time critical journeys, calculating calories, working out a route, helping an individual with their finances, shopping or simply just arriving to work on time – the list is endless!

It is therefore vital that these skills continue to be developed throughout your course and your career. Within your study programme, you will be given the opportunity to improve your GCSE grade in maths and English, you will also enhance your skills through vocationally related tasks and competitions.

Other important information

As you will be working with vulnerable people in work experience, you will be required to apply for a Disclosure and Barring Service check. This will be carried out via an email link sent to you from South Staffordshire College at a cost of £44.00. It is essential that this is completed within 4 weeks of commencing the course.

You will also be required to obtain a work placement polo shirt to wear in placements, this is purchased through school uniform stockists and costs approximately £10.00- a list of suppliers will be provided to you upon enrolment.
