    Are you a school leaver 16-19? Fancy the idea of working in the hair industry? The level 2 diploma in women’s hairdressing is a substantial vocational qualification that will prepare you for a career as a junior hairdresser/stylist. You will experience working in a real salon environment where skills are practiced and performed on real paying clients. The course is made up of both theory and practical session, exams and assignments.

    There is a requirement to purchase a hairdressing kit and uniform. Uniform and kit are a compulsory requirement of the course.

    Uniform (Cost to be confirm during enrolment)

    • Black trousers
    • Black flat shoes
    • Black tunic

    Full Hairdressing Kit (Approx £200, cost to be confirm during enrolment)
    This includes training heads, scissors, combs, clips and brushes

    Uniform and kit packages will be discussed further at interview and order forms will be made available at enrolment.  All kit and uniform will need to be purchased through the college supplies and not independently

  • Required qualifications

    Level 1 relevant vocational qualification or 3 x GCSE’s grade 3 or equivalent.

  • What skills will I develop?

    This is a vocational qualification and includes all the required elements to work effectively as a hairdresser/stylist including the mandatory units which include, working in the hair industry, health and safety, client consultation, shampoo and conditioning hair, cutting women’s hair, colour and lighten women’s hair, the art of dressing hair and perming hair, and others.

    Throughout this qualification you will develop your knowledge and understanding of anatomy, health and safety, client consultation, and products, tools and equipment. You will also develop a range of technical skills enabling you to effectively consult with clients, shampoo and condition, and cut and finish their hair. You will also develop interpersonal skills, which will assist you to communicate effectively with clients.

  • Careers

    This qualification will prepare you for employment as a junior hairdresser/stylist. You will also be eligible to join the professional trade body, the Hairdressing Council as a graduate registered hairdresser. Career opportunities as a hairdresser/stylist exist in a variety of contexts, including:

    • Commercial salon
    • Independent/self-employed/mobile/home-based settings

    Whilst this qualification’s primary purpose is to prepare you for employment, you may choose to further develop your skill base by undertaking specialist qualifications at Level 3 or sidestep into a Level 2 barbering qualification or select an alternative beauty route.

    The data show that hair and beauty is in a growth area for the next 3 years and is predicted to grow by 5%, it is predicted that 60% of that will be in the field of hair and barbering.

    The average salary for a Junior Hair Stylist is £15,555 per year in England, which meets the national average. This will depend on experience, age and area.

  • Work experience

    Work experience is a compulsory aspect of the course. This is designed to harmonise the theory you will learn in class and the real world applications of the course. Through work experience, you will learn valuable skills, such as interpersonal skills, independence, confidence and commercial awareness.

    All learners are required to complete at least 40 hours work experience hours in a hairdressing salon.  Your tutors will support you in finding placements.

  • English and maths

    English and Maths qualifications are an integral part of the working world and will help you prosper. If you do have English or Maths qualification at Grade 4 (Grade C) then the college is here to help. 

    You will be asked to attend classes where you will be assisted through the qualification, completing the GSCE exam at the end of the academic year.
